Canon 85mm 1.8 vs Samyang/Rokinon 85mm 1.4

Looking to pick up one of these as a cheap portrait and street lens. The construction of the Rokinon looks pretty good, nice bokeh, and the fully manual nature of it doesnt bother me too much, and the price is excellent.

However, i can pick up the Canon second hand for about the same amount, and this has thrown a spanner in the works. I cant find a huge number of reviews of the Canon, as they seem to trend twoards the 85L rather than the 1.8.

Any thoughts on which way to go?

While i was in that situation, i'm picked Rokinon. And i'm happy with it.
Probably will change, but only for a Sigma 85 or even 85L

In tests of the Rokinon i've seen the wide open side is closer to f/1.6 than f/1.4 so there isn't really much difference from the Canon f/1.8 once you stop down a bit for optimum sharpness. I have the Canon 85 and it's autofocusing is fast, fast, fast. Did I mention it was fast? It's also one of the best bang for the buck primes in image quality Canon makes. So if you can pick up a Canon 85 for the same price as the Rokinon I would lean towards the Canon in this case.

The Rok should be about 30% cheaper, shouldn't it? Even in Australia?

Canon 85 1.8 is a great lens. I've had the 1.8 and the 85L - not that much to choose between them for sharpness. Plus - resale on the Canon will be excellent and you'll get your money back on it if you want to sell.

Yea. I am leaning more towards the Rok 85 simply for the fun factor being a manual lens.

I'd go for the Canon. Not much better 1.8 and 1.4, but there is a world of difference between MF and superfast AF of the Canon. PQ wise, the 85 1.8 is execellent.

It really depends on how good you are at focusing. Or rather, the willingness to practice focusing. Both are great. The Rokinon is quite well made and sharp. So is the Canon but it has autofocus too.
