Just read this on CanonRumors.

Looks like I won't be buying the 400 f/5.6L prime after all and will keep saving up for this monster! Can't wait!

You do know that the 100-400 has been rumored for replacement for years? And CR2 rating does not mean anything significant. It may be another 2-3 years before we see it!

I sold my first 100-400 2 years ago to a guy who knew an insighter at Canon. He told me that he wanted to buy my copy because the new one would be twice as expensive. :lolz:

It will easily be a big price jump like all the other "II" lenses.

Current one sells for $1589 new... Given the at least roughly 50% price increases on all the new lenses, it will be about $2500 to $2800 for the new version.

Even if it is announced today it will be a year until we see it. :)

If a 200-400 and the mk2 100-400 arrive I would be seriously torn which to choose. The 200-400 would seem a better fit with my other lenses, with a seamless range from 16mm to 400mm.

At the moment I've got the 100-200mm range covered twice. Everything would depend on optical performance and I imagine the 200-400 would have the edge there.

I hope the 100-400 won't be anywhere near the price range of the 200-400. That would make it a non-starter.

Canon already has a 70-300 and a 200-400. I wouldn't be surprised if the 100-400 mk2 is just a pipe dream. It would be nice to have if it can stay below the $2K mark, but I don't think they will release a new lens with that range at that price point.

Judging by the prices of other new lenses, I cannot see the mk2 100-400 coming in below £2k, never mind even less at $2k. I'd see it at slightly less than the 200-400L, but not by that much.

Slightly less than the 200-400L? You understand the consensus is that the 200-400 will be around (or maybe in fact above) $11k?

It will be expensive no doubt but I do think it will eventually happen. The 70-300L is more of a compact L while the 200-400 is a super high end pro lens. I think it would fit right in the middle in the $2000 to $3000 price range. Honestly if it performed like the 70-300L or 70-200 2.8L II I it would make for a tough choice.

And they were going to announce a replacement for the 100-400 any day now back when I joined this forum in 2005. Even IF they announce it, it won't be available for 6mo-1yr, and it will be at least $3,000.

Buy the 400mm 5.6 used, enjoy it, and IF, and it is a massive IF, a new 100-400 is announced, sell the 400 and upgrade after the lens is readily available (look at all the people who ditched their 24-70 2.8 L's six months ago and have been sitting around twittling their thumbs waiting for the new lens this whole time).

I know it has been mentioned already, but it bears reinforcing, you do realize that the 200-400 F4 L will be by all accounts priced (and we know for sure sized) in line with the "big boy" white primes: so at least $10,000. Even if Canon prices a new "mythical" 100-400 around $3,000, you would have to have pretty deep pockets for it to be a "torn" choice.

Yeah... I think he might get sticker shock when that lens comes out. It will be a hell of a lens, but not a lens priced for enthusiasts.

If it performed like the 70-200 f/2.8L mk2, then I'd be first in the que. That lens has really impressed me, so much better than the mk1 version its unbelievable.

A 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS II could only happen if a mark I version existed. That third of a stop difference seems to have been forgotten by everyone.
