Walk-around today

I got this lens used. I am not sure if this is a good copy. What date codes are considered better ones?

Perhaps you're standing too close?

Use the AF points and don't recompose.

Oh I wasn't necessarily talking about this shot. I know I missed the focus point a by body being in focus.

Overall, this copy doesn't seem sharp at 1.2. I know it's not supposed to be, I am just wondering if this is softer compared to other copied. Perhaps I should post raw files on this forum so someone could check..

Post a 100% crop. We can't tell from a regular photo since it looks in complete focus.

Man, I miss this stinkin' lens! I needed some money and had to choose between selling this or my 35L. I think I may have made the wrong choice, darn it.

i dont see any back or front focusing issues. looks ok to me. got a shot at f2.8? want to see if it is sharp as my tamron. You said it wont be sharp as my 70-200 though?

strange because the general consense is that primes are sharper them zooms

what others have said earlier about sharpness is true. you don't buy this lens for sharpness. i own the 35L and 85L which are both superior to the 50L in terms of sharpness wide open. however, there's a certain.. "look" about the 50mm focal length and the way this lens draws an image. it's very distinct, and despite it's softness at f/1.2 and it's focus shifting issue in the specified focal length and aperture range, this lens spends more time on my camera than any other.

if you want critical sharpness, stop it down or buy one of the other lenses in this range. when you purchase a 50L, you do it for the 50mm focal length and the otherworldly subject separation that you can achieve.

Very well worded and exactly to the point!

Well, I thought my mind was made up on buying this lens. Now I'm not sure.

My pixel peeping, sharpness OCD might cause me to be disppointed in shelling out 1,500 clams for a lens that's not so sharp wide open.

Do I need therapy? :)

Buy the lens, then get therapy.
You will be OK and have a great lens besides. ;)

I can take a shot with the tripod. Any recommended settings?

Get a refurb from Canon for $1250, save some scratch.
