I'm considering changing out the focus screen on my 50D to a grid type screen. My optometrist tells me my eyes are not crooked, but as much as I really try and compose with a level horizon, seems I many times end up having to straighten things up a bit in PP.

How difficult is it to change out the focus screen? Is the tool/instruction provided with the screen sufficient enough to get the job done effectively? Any tips, suggestions, or feedback appreciated.

I agree that it is pretty easy. Difficulty rating of 5 out of 10.

More like a 2 out of 10 on difficulty. Hardest part I ever have is seeing the "slot" to catch the tool in that releases the screen holder. I have changed them on all 4 of my cameras including a 50D.

Why I did not have the foresight to just do a google search I cannot explain. :o

It took me around 15 seconds the first time I ever tried it. I watched a YouTube video to see how it was done and then did it. It's pretty easy.

It's pretty simple to do, but nerve-racking as hell the first time.

My biggest advice: once you grab the focusing screen by the little tab, DON'T DROP IT! It's easy to slip out of your grip when blowing air at it.

That's what happened to me, dropped it, scratched it, than had to buy another one...

Its easy once you've scratched one and are aware how delicate they are. If you're doing it once its fine. Not somthing thats very fun to do in the field.

No, not at all - they get dusty easily and it is hard to get it all off.

I was trying to clean it. Have to buy new one after it and here is more dust then before. But it was on Rebel, not on 50D.

I use both 50D (with the grid screen) and 7D and I never cease to be amazed how off-level I often am when I check it with the 7D's electronic level. Just one way in which the 7D has improved my technique...
