Something that might interest you all: Cheap flash trigger will help Canon users focus in the dark (external link)

It's a radio trigger with an AF assist in the transmitter.

No telling whether it's any good yet. Or if it's compatible with Yongnuo RF-602 triggers as some of the listings say. Anybody willing to take the plunge and find out?

That would be alot lighter then have to use the canon st-e2 with a trigger mounted on top. I might have to try that

I saw those on eBay the other day, and to me they look like relabeled YN 602's. I was going to get some, but I have 3 602RF's, so I'm pretty set on them, although, cheap enough to have a spare though.

i'm sure they are the same guts as the rf-602 just modified for the laser. is it actually a laser (like a laser pointer) or more like a red glow like the pixels?

I don't know about everyone else, but I can't see any sort of assist lamp in the pictures. Unless it's that tiny light... in which case I'd have to wonder how well it works!

Wow that's tiny. I wonder how small an area the laser covers... I guess all it needs to do is provide enough light/contrast to the selected focus point.

OK just came in the mail. The laser only engages when mounted on the camera. It lis a laser with what i call a geometric flower pattern. It does not line up with any AF points on the canon rebel xs1000d/50D/7D 5D mkII, but it does line up on one of the outer points on the 1Ds mkII. That is standing 5 feet from the subject on this test. If I move back further it I catch a outer AF point on the 7D.

With out opening it up and moving the laser its a piece of pooo.

abbadon31, could you help me to confirm if the laser is taken in to the photo? in our understanding, no af lamp is possible without ttl. Thanks.

Sure it only turns on for a second and if you didn't get an af lock you have to repress the shutter button. The laser pattern looks like a soccer ball, but shuts off before you take your image. The further you step back the larger the pattern gets. Even at 12 ft the pattern will kinda catch a af point.

I opened it up and the laser doesnt have a focus or angle adjustment. It has a piece of film on the front of the laser that has the pattern on it.

Going to have to see what I can do to fix it.

kind of odd for them to use a beam that's actually visible to the human eye. defeats the purpose of discrete shooting :(
