Maybe he was checking for the 5D Mk III style light leak.

The only time my lens cap is on is when the camera is in the bag. I take it off as soon as I pull the camera out. Take off cap, reverse hood, turn on. Ready to shoot.

I've gotten progressively faster at detecting when I have forgotten the lens cap on. I'm down to about a minute.

A minute is a hell of a long time :)

The few of times I've done it I was testing for hot pixels, honest ;)

I use uv filters so I don't use any caps. Never an issue with me
