Question, Do most modern higher end DSLRs not already do this supposedly? isnt that a big point of having a color meter is that it can sort of tell "this is a person and this should be given more weight in the exposure because its likely the subject"?

Only reason i ask is that its Apple and we know how Apple is with its patents..

Oh boy, now Apple fanboys are going to credit Apple with face detection... This has been happening in the compact camera world for at least the past 5 years. In fact, it's gotten advanced enough that the camera will switch modes based on seeing a person (face) in the frame, or even seeing a face and a backlight!

The trick, as always, will be to get the camera to actually see the face to make the feature work.

I was playing with a friend's camcorder recently, it even has a SMILE METER to say what percent you're smiling at... Yes it caused me much amusement (SMILE MORE! You're only at 7%!)

It wasnt even a particularly expensive camcorder or anything

Also i might add, im not sure if its patented, but my Samsung Galaxy Nexus seems to do this, in fact, it handles exposure FAR better than my iPhone 4 did, it picks my face out and tends to expose my face correctly even if im backlit...

Ahhh... The smile shutter...

When Sony first introduced that, we took to calling it the "creeper" shutter, because (a) it was a creepy thing to see that a camera knew so much, and (b) the first examples always made you have to smile really big, which made you look creepy, too!

Oh no, not quite that, this is more like it has boxes over peoples faces and it says "Smile Detected: 7%" over the boxes to tell you the probability of everyone smiling... XD it actually did work pretty well (IE no creeper grin needed to hit 100%) i just laughed at it because i didnt know such a thing existed before

Also could be worse, There was the entire Nikon "Are you blinking" thing.. xD

Without diving deeper in to it I'm just going to assume Apple is again patenting something they didn't really invent and that it should never have been granted to them.

With that... I'm going to sign off of this forum at work now. Funny though. :p

Only reason i ask is that its Apple and we know how Apple is with its patents..

now apple will sue Canon (and other companies) for using their face detection technology that they just patented.

apple is cancer on innovation.

Maybe they'll just sue Samsung since that seems to be their favorite whipping boy these days.

I saw down with Apple! Let's grab some pitchforks and torches and storm the castle. Freaking hate that company.

Kinda sad really. I remember when Apple was just barely hanging on with the educational market back in the day. Since the iMac in the late 90's, I was excited for their success because I never liked Windows much. But seeing the masses drink the koolaid (or the apple juice in this case) makes me sick. I LOVE the mac computer hardware and will admit the iPod touch was amazing, but over spending on a tablet because it is a bloated iPod or paying exorbitant prices for cell phones that at the time I post don't even have 4g yet, sickens me.

Apple and their flock of good sheep are looking more and more like a new religion each day. What would Xenu do? He would buy an iPad.
