I am amazed at the difference in sounds of the shutters on Canon Cameras, my XTi sounded fake, like a P&S camera, the 50D sounds great, but the 7D is as different from the 50D as the 50D was from the XTi.

you know its a bunch of camera geeks when we start talking about shutter sounds!!!
but yeah, the 50D sounds great..... cant speak for any of the xD bodies, but it sure beats the snot out of the T2i i had

The main issue with weather proofing the 50D, lies in the lens mount, if the lens isn't providing a seal, then it dosn't matter how well sealed the rest of the body is.

If your gear list is up to date, the nifty fifty isn't weather proof at all.

I wouldn't hesitate to submit my gear to the conditions you're describing, I have been out in pouring rain with my 50D + 70-200L and it came through with flying colors.
