How lucky do you feel? Lucky enough to save $500 and hope your camera doesn't have any problems for a year? I'd probably take that bet.

So basically due to them not being authorized you lose the 1Y canon warranty?

Good note about the authorized seller list, so these would be effectively gray market, even if they have a US warranty card.

It was my understanding that gray market items DON'T have a US warranty card (you need to return them to Japan for service). Is that not correct?

for service covered under warranty, that's correct
local service would cost... and if you're CPS, then not that big a deal!

Actually I think some folks have been successful getting it for $3150 from an authorized Canon dealer on eBay, so the saving is really only about $150 for the risk.

so if they are authorized sellers on ebay, then wouldn't the 5D3 be covered under Canons 1 yr warranty?

someone said they think those 5d3 bodies are gray market...hmmm

is the 1 year warranty that important? Other than that, what's bad about a grey market product?

I've been in the electronics business for 30+ years and in my experience most electronic devices tend to fail catastrophically early on or they tend to last to close to their rated MTBF. Generally you don't see a large number of "mid-life" catastrophic failures on quality products from respected manufacturers.

So ask yourself this... if your ~$3400 5D MkIII goes "poof" in the first year and the Canon authorized repair center tech says "Something shorted out and the entire 'guts' needs to be replaced. It'll be cheaper to replace the camera than fix it" will risking all that be worth the couple hundred saved on a grey-market/un-authorized retailer purchase?

Thanks for the info!
What if both the authorized or grey market failed after the first year warranty coverage? If you have to send it back to Canon, will it cost the same?

Do you guys buy cameras on Craigslist? Got the 5d3 w/ lens kit for $3,700 a couple days ago. Sold lens same day, so I really got the camera for $2,900 brand new no tax. Has warranty card. I sold a week old 5d2 w/ lens kit for $2,700 the same day. I'd say it's worth the risk for only $200 more to move on the III.

No reciept from an Canon Authorized retailer then no warranty so that warranty card you have isn't worth it's weight in sheep dip. If you make it through the first year you got a screaming deal. I paid $3199 for my 5D MkIII from Amazon. I have a full warranty, 30 day money back guarantee, online support, etc. I don't like risk and since there's no way I can get my wife to agree to let me buy another one if this one goes down in flames this year I chose to pay a bit more from a Canon Authorized retailer. I'm not saying I'm smarter, better, or anything of the sort.... just safer...

If you have a high tolerance for risk then go for it, I don't, it's something each person has to decide for themselves, it's your money afterall...

Life is all about risks so only you can answer that... just don't buy a $20 Rolex... I heard they're all fakes...

Yes. After the first year where you got it from is irrelevant as long as it wasn't stolen (and reported as such) and then sold to you.

Interesting D800 hasn't budged from $2999, but 5D3 has come down almost $500 since introduction...

That's no surprise. Nikon tends to hold it's value longer. Surprisingly, the D3s is holding well around $4K to $4300 used even though the D4 is out. :)
