I now shoot with a Canon 50d and am looking to purchase my next canon within the next 6 months. The question is what to buy? My budget is around $2000. I take portrait and sports quite a bit, am a person looking to one day have a part time photo business. What recommendations for the next body and if you could explain why? Thanks.
M;)

In what way(s) do you find your current 50D lacking?

My vote would be to look for a used 1D Mark III. Based on the speed and better IQ.

Other cameras in the range are the new 7D where you will see increased speed but not a significant increase in IQ. The 5D Mark II will give you the increase in IQ but you will suffer with speed and focus.

portrait (one of the 5D's would work well, I'd pick up a 5Dc for this), your "sports quite a bit" are probably things that move, a good choice would be one of the newer 1D series bodies or a 7D.

Some rumors about an entry level FF and 7D Mark II coming out. Of course, they are still rumors but based on the consistency the liklihood of seeing those cameras seems high.

Yeah, as has been suggested, you're going to have a hard time getting the best of both worlds in one camera.. within your budget. The 5D Mk III would be perfect for you..excellent for portraits, and excellent for sports...but $3500. The 5Dc and 5D II don't have the focus system for sports. The 7D is good for sports, but won't offer much in the way of improved IQ over your 50D, for portraiture.

I do love my 50d and still learning all of the lovely things that it can do. I am looking for a camera to update and will use my 50d as a back up. I could still use my 50d for portraits and then get one solely for sports? Which then, would be better for solely sports. Mostly basketball and hockey????

Another suggestion, sell your 50D and get a 5Dc and 7D.

For under $2000, you could get yourself into a 1D III, or even cheaper would be the 7D. At least with the 7D, it's more similar to the 50D than the 1D, when switching back and forth between bodies.

Very interesting and if I had that, I would have done it. Actually, come to think of it, I SHOULD have, but I chose the 5d2 because I already had my 50D :-)

5d2 Portraits, Events
50D Sports, etc.(more backup)
