"Orange Peel" effect on photos (1D MK III)

I've been noticing the last couple races that photos taken with my 1D MK III seem to have this "orange peel" effect to them and trying to figure out if its some form of noise, user error or some weird phenomenon deal. It is more noticeable after adding sharpening and when zooming in on the photos. I can really tell a difference when viewing a 1D MK III file and a 5D MK II file which has me to think maybe its something with the 1D's AA filter. 5D MK II files seem to be so much cleaner when zooming in. Could it be that I'm just pixel peeping too much? haha

I have no idea what you're talking about from those photos. There's also no EXIF data to those jpgs, so we don't know what your settings are. At least in the grassy area of the first photo, there's some ugly bokeh in it, as if noise reduction blotches were sharpened.

Damn had a feeling the EXIF data wouldn't stick with it when uploading and of course I don't have the original files on hand till Sunday. I would say both were at ISO 100-200 @2.8. First one is probably around 1/2000 shutter speed with the second one being around 1/500 or so, added sharpening to both via PS Smart Sharpen and no noise reduction was done.

Atmospheric effects (heat waves reflecting off the track). All you MKIII shots are using super-telephotos which make the effect more pronounced. All the 5D shots are closer so they're not as visible.

Thank you Jigglypuff That does make sense because I've never noticed this type of effect when shooting people or non-motorsport events where that heat isn't there.
