In a group shot in a church wedding, are you gonna use modifiers like umbrella, softboxes and all?

I was thinking of my speedlight only on top of my camera with a diffuser. Time seems to run so fast during the wedding so setting up lighting is i guess a waste of time.

Thanks for your input.

I couldn't be bothered setting up umbrella, softboxes for church group shot wedding.

Single spedlite will do just fine.

There is not time for fancy setup's in those scenarios, just put a modifier on your speedlight. If you have an assistant or a friend they can hold the speedlight for you off camera I guess.

Tons of videos on youtube for group shots only with one speedlight and great results :D

Fancy setups?? I use a single flash off camera with an umbrella all the time. It takes 30 seconds to set up and is not fancy. The more you can shoot off camera flash, the better.

FYI, your post should be in the "Sharing knowhow" section not "Photo sharing" section.

IMO, flash on camera with modifier is just fine as time is crunching during shoot these most of the time, BUT the ambient light is a big factor to consider. If it's really dark inside, try to see if you can shoot them outside (these shoot be iron out during the walk-through for location prior to the wedding).
If you are interest, you can see some shots from one of my latest wedding here (external link) shooting with flash on camera with a fun-form DIY flip-it modifier.

One group shot ? You mean just the bridal party + close family ?

I definitely take advantage of being inside and being able to control light more by using an off-camera flash + umbrella on a lightstand. If you can take 3 minutes to set up, why not do so and get far better results than shooting with ambient usually gives ? If the group shot isn't the one you go all out for with light control, then what photo is ?

I should add: if you know the church isn't so important for the couple and you know that you're doing group shots at a better location, then, yes, I'll probably shoot these with ambient possibly with a flash bounced off the ceiling. I avoid any lighting choices that creates harsh shadows behind the subjects at all times, however,

Whatchou talkin' 'bout, willis ? It's up to us to find out which photos are important to the client; and if they're important, we tell them how much time we need, we set up (even fancily !), we take the photo(s).

It's not a fancy set up.

Just have two off camera flashes, one on your right pointed at the left half of the group and one on your left pointed at the right half of the group. Set them both to the same power. And you can easily control your flash exposure by adjusting your aperture if you don't have wireless control.

Yep. Every time. I use two speedlights and umbrella or a mono light and large softbox. I fire them with pocket wizards. I plan ahead and have them ready to go. It takes me less than 30 seconds to set up my dual speed light/umbrella combo. I can set up my mono light and softbox in about three minutes.

If you think that a single speedlight on your camera with a fong dong is going to give you great results in every venue you are wrong.

^ Indeed. Perhaps the church venue is a white square room 10'x10'x10' ? If so, that fong donger'll do wonders :D

bw! I try to book as many weddings as I can in 10' x 10' white venues so as to make the lighting easer. :p

For church group shots I do one speed light through an umbrella from a high angle right beside me and one speed light on cam with a bounce card for fill. It's a very quick setup.
