'Congress grass' or Parthenium hysterophorus, a toxic weed, is a native of Tropical America. Scientists describe it as a "poisonous, allergic and aggressive weed posing a serious threat to human beings and livestock." It causes health hazards such as skin allergy, hay fever and asthma in human beings, and is toxic to livestock.

It was first introduced in India due to contaminated PL-480 wheat imported from the United States, and is also known as 'Congress Grass' due to the Congress party government which imported the wheat. Parthenium is not native to India, but it has spread like wildfire, affecting both farm and waste land. It now covers millions of hectares across the length and breadth of the country. The presence of Parthenium in cropped lands results in yield reduction by up to 40 per cent. The pollen grains inhibit fruit set in tomato, brinjal (egg plant), beans, etc.

A very interesting story Sharad. It is disappointing and frustrating that here in the US our natural ecology has been severely damaged due to the importing (either accidental or intentional) of plants and creatures. Great plants like the ash tree and numerous evergreens are being systematically wiped out by asian beetles. And I've wondered if ecologies in other regions of the world have been savaged by imports from North America. Now I know. Globalization has its environmental downsides.

Really nice shot.

Thank you for the great comments!!! This took quite a while to nail. Working with fabric is quite a nightmare. The guy sitting down was only there because we were trying to get the fabric right. He was ment to be moving as well.

Either way, I'm very pleased with this!!!

Now there is some poverty...

Great capture Al.

Thanks:) Actually, the look of poverty is misleading. It is a huge food market, but it is only in the morning. In the afternoon it looks like a big mess when everything is being cleaned out.
