Tried taking video for the first time. This was the result.
Anyone here shoot NIGHTCLUB/NIGHTLIFE video? It would seem that it's a very small community that does.

I just watched it, I think it turned out great!
- what did you use to create the video? premiere?
- I have no experience w/ cutting video and have limited my self to using all images from a night and making it into a video lol

Thank you very much. Personally I was a bit disappointing with the amount of focus (or a lack of) in the video. It was my first time trying to manually focus in a club so it was a bit difficult.

Heres another one I semi-edited. Im waiting for the audio to be able to actually finish it but yea, these were a bit more focused.

As for your question, To edit this video I just used Sony Vegas. In the future I will most likely use Premiere. As well i threw some effects on the video in After Effects.

Shot with a 5d2 on a 50mm 1.4

I'm equipped for it, and every night I'm out I shoot at least 10-20 minutes of footage at the event, just to build up a library for clients.

Usually in a nightclub situation, it's not worth it for the club to recap one specific event, regardless of the DJ. Crowd footage, dancers, DJ playing, rinse and repeat. And they usually don't have the budget to justify a long-form (15-20 minutes) of a specific DJ or act, i.e. behind the scenes, interview, etc.

So, most of the places I deal with do periodic recaps of their previous couple of months, or a specific theme for a season, or need footage for an upcoming campaign or series of events. That's when my stock library I've been building comes in handy.

A good example is, with one venue I'm dealing with, a third party wants to host a DJ competition during the early hours of the club. They want to put together a video to promote their event. They lack their own shooter, so the work got tossed to me. Now, rather than shoot specifically for them (they didn't have the budget to pay for specific footage from me), I just sold them footage I shot awhile ago, and was paid for already. Licensing - zing!

On the technical side, video is more challenging to shoot in a club than stills.

- Noise in video is harder to deal with. 1600 is about your upper limit on most DSLRs unless you're gonna slam the footage with filters and effects in post.

- Autofocus? What's that?

- A lot of people think you are shooting stills and stand there waiting for a flash to go off. You have to do the little old-timey "crank" motion to imply you are shooting video.

- Stabilization. DSLRs are not built for video in an ergonomic sense. You have to either have rock-solid arms or you have to invest in a Redrock system, which can run from $400-$2000 depending on your configuration. The Redrock system rules, but you definitely have to justify it.

- Audio. Obviously for crowd and DJ footage you'll have to either record the set with a timecode-capable recorder (if your DSLR supports timecode, it might not) , find music that matches the movement and tempo of your edit, and if you're doing interviews, a place that is somewhat quiet to do them.

- Lenses. If you want low noise you're gonna have to go wide open. This means primes pretty much. Most zoom lenses don't go below 2.8. There's a few cine zooms that go a stop or so below that, but they are rare and expensive. So primes it is, and the inherent juggling of swapping lenses.

- Dealing with extra outboard gear is a huge hassle in a club. If you're doing a specific video project, you're gonna be rolling heavy.

Most successful well-produced video projects in clubs actually involve two or more cameras and someone to coordinate it all.

I use second, Just so if here is blur then it is behind the subject instead of in front.
Some good photos there, and Hope you don't mind me saying but try turning the flash exposure up slightly, it will make the people pop a bit more in your photos

1st Curtain... I like to know I'm capturing what I see when I press the shutter and not what happens half a second later! Also so people aren't confused by the first flash.

First curtain by default since the ST-E2 doesn't support second curtain and I never use on-camera flash.
