Have wedding albums or hiring a pro for wedding photos become less important?

I'm seeing quite a few "my friends are getting married and they can't afford a professional photographer" threads here on POTN. Do you guys think people really can't afford it or they just don't want to invest in it? Maybe just a result of modern times and priorities?

I think its hard to generalize about the various threads, but I also think you can see certain trends developing in both directions. On the top end, the cost of weddings is outrageous. Brides (or their families) are dropping tons of cash to make the special day over the top. Those people are spending cash and lots of it. On the bottom end though it seems that it might be less important. The economy certainly took a bite out of certain folks extra cash, and the proliferation of good quality cameras and the lowered standards for images post camera phone/facebook may devalue the photo. It all depends on which direction you are looking.

Agreed with gonzogolf.

You are basing things off of a few threads in here?

I think there are always going to be those people who feel they don't want to pay a lot for wedding photos. Wedding photos mean different things to different people. Some don't care at all and just want some snap shots. Others will go all out and get all the trimmings. The economy will affect a certain segment of the population so if you are targeting that group, then sure, you might here a lot about not wanting to spend money on certain things.

Thanks for your responses. Other than the threads here on POTN, I've noticed less wedding albums when we visit other couples, etc. When I was growing up there appeared to be more of those on people's living rooms. Should've added that on my initial post.

Specifically with weddings albums, yeah I imagine with certain segments, it'll be less and less common? Especially with places like Adorama and Blurb catering to the masses, you know?
