It really didn't want to focus, but given the conditions, I'm not all the surprised!

At longer distances, atmosphere also playes a very big part.

I thought I'd try a long shot, just to see what could be achieved. We have hazy cloud, making aircraft a less than ideal target, but here goes. With a few tweaks I guess it's not bad for a 7D hand held at 300mm, 1/320, f/2.8, 100 ISO and viewed at 100%.

First the full frame, showing before/after and then a 100% crop.

Having had the lens for about 2 months now, I only gave it a good work out on a recent trip to Amsterdam Schipol Airport. All the images I took are relatively soft, I would have expected better things from this lens to be honest. I can still edit the images up to decent standard at 1600pixels, however it is a little frustrating to have to work with the soft images.

I don't know whether I am just expecting too much of this lens or if it needs recalibrating by Sigma. I am tempted to ship the lens off to the Sigma repair centre in the UK, along with my Canon 7D, and ask them to recalibrate the lens and body together, as with the warrenty it should be free.

Below is a completely unedited JPEG from one of my RAW files... very soft looking.

Another image, this time edited so at least they are all editable.

Any opinions on whether a calibration would be a good idea?

Dave

That full size pic is at 79.9 meters which is the max that the lens will show on exif so it could be 100-300-400 meters away. Try taking some at 5-25 meters away and check them out. Long distance shots can be difficult becaue of the air quality over long range

The air quality does look like it could have affected the sharpness to me

Yes, I agree, considering the size of the plane and that it was taken at 300mm, the distance could have easily been at least 150-200m.
F/7.1 should produce a very sharp image, even with a not perfectly calibrated lens under the right conditions.

Try testing the lens at various apertures on a subject that is about 15-25m away, in good lighting on a calm clear day, preferably without having a hot surface (e.g. sun-lit asphalt, concrete) between you and the subject.
Ideally, test on a tripod using AF AND MF (live view, 10X magnification, manual focusing). Then compare AF and MF images. Maybe your lens needs micro focus adjustment. In rare cases a lens may need aligning the groups and elements. but I don't think that's the problem here.

I think the Delta flight looks decent, I wouldn't call it very soft.

Thanks for the comments guys. The funny thing was I thought I had microadjusted the focus and ended up with a +8 setting for the Sigma 120-300mm F28 OS.

Then halfway through my trip (and when a quiet gap between aircraft arrivals occured), I tried several shots with various microadjust figures and 0 turned out to be the sharpest so I returned the setting to 0 for the rest of the trip.

I guess I am being a bit too harsh on the lens, long distance shots in the winter in crisper colder conditions would be more representative of the quality. Anyhow, here's a few more unprocessed images, at least the KLM and Air Transit seem better. (by the way, I hope adding flickr links to a post is ok, I've no other idea how to attach full ized images to the post).

Great pictures Dave!
I'm also into airplanes but spotting at US airports nearby (e.g. DTW) doesn't even cross my mind. I just don't want to deal with police and/or security bugging me. Since 9-11 it has been much tougher just to hang out around airports and snapping photos (especially with a bazooka-looking long tele lens) :)

So I go to airshows instead :)

Thanks Gabe, yes I have heard it can be a tough life being a spotter in the US, not many spotter friendly airports unfortunately. Thankfully in Europe there are quite a number of spotter friendly airport, including the two I just visited, Amsterdam Schipol and Zurich Airport, both offer fantastic photography opportunities and the local authorities seemingly get on well with the local photographers. :)
