Yup, lots of research later and I have abandoned all hope. I have also discovered that the size of the 'single point' AF area extends way past the area marked by the black square causing me to get lots of 'focus on microphone rather than eye' images at Wilson Phillips concert. I'm liking my 1D4's better and better, but I will keep working with the 1DX as it is clearly Canon's 'Wave of the Future', sigh.

Is it worth trying the spot focus for a smaller area or did you have the focus point expansion on? I'm still playing with mine and the weather's grotty so haven't had a lot of chance to practice with the options yet. I gather using all the 61 points has a tendency to pick up on the nearest thing in the viewfinder as well.

Just realised from the post I quoted, you've probably tried all this lot already - I'll go back to sleep.. ;)

Adphoto, I used the 'Single Point AF'. I will be trying the 'Spot Single Point AF' at my next concert, but I have been warned that it doesn't work as well as desired so I'll be testing ... maybe shoot some of both. No, I don't use expansion for concerts ... the DOF is shallow and the more sensors used the more likely to simply get the contrastiest object rather than the face of the performer.

I do really enjoy his reviews, shooting through the net was quite interesting.

Looks very Noisy and that's a heavy resize. I can't imagine what the Original looks like.

Noise was added in post. Original looks clean.

Amazing!

The look on their faces is like they're still waiting for their 1Dx and they're jealous that you've already got yours.
