Took it to the zoo for random run 'n gun shooting with the fam. Straight out of cam shot in raw.

Nice shots. Innocence personified!!

Man - this thread has gone dead-slow. I remember it used to be different when I owned this lens.

Hello everyone,

I just bought my copy of the lens and so far like it very much, however there are two things that bother me:
- when I press the AF button, the VC is triggered and there is a phase where the image moves in the viewfinder during around 1 sec (I didn't have this on my Canon 17-85IS)
- sometimes at 50mm the lens won't focus: thus I have enabled the "keep focusing" in the settings of my 40D; the AF hunts a little but it ends up focusing right where I want it

Is this normal with the lens?

When I first bought this lens, it would not autofocus at all. Returned it for another copy which works fine.
The image moving in the viewfinder is normal as far as I know, mine does it too when I have vc enabled.

I hope you can help me guys, what i i have here with me, i think, a bad factory copy of this Tamron.
I've read many manuals, in English and Spanish (my native language) and I'm driving the camera by understanding the basics of exposure, aperture and shutter as it should be, it is not 100%, but I take my time to get the best shots (according to me) well exposed and everything else.

I confirmed once more two days ago, I went to one of those photo expeditions with my 60D with this lens I use most, the Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC, that i order. The locations where I went were mostly nature , those shots that go right focus to infinity, or using the hyperfocal, going from f/8.0 to 11 and ISO 100 on a sunny day, activating the "Highlight tone priority", I'm taking photos between 17mm and 50mm, shooting raw and using sometimes the Magic Lantern 2.3, funtions and sometimes not, and the results? in order, checking the photos on my PC, I see blurred images, even though they often use auto focus, often as a reference, and most of all manual focus, (and the camera in Manual mode), as I focus while the photos, as I said, I take the time to take the picture, I notice that the last pictures I took are noisy, are blurred in the corners and I notice that the photos I take with the camera vertically I get more focused when the take horizontally, has me worried.

Every day I took the camera, practice a lot and I think something is happening or the lens or the camera settings or with me (i dont think so), this weekend i have a contract, as backup photographer at the wedding a friend and I'm worried because those issues, i never accept a formal job because of this and still reading here that the non VC Tamron version is more sharpen than the VC version, watching here the VC version works well, is totally disappointing.

Look at this page with a Tamron without the VC, I would take my photos this way, using the picture style "Normal" doing my white balance with my grey 18% card and sometimes using my Lightcraft ND filter on the lens, never got results like this:

http://www.canonistas.com …mron-17-50-f2-8-a-30.html (external link)

Even worse, my photos are not like this section of the forum.

And i know, many of these images are processed, but others not.

See the pics here:

All these photos are not "reveal it" and without post processing, because the first two corners are shockingly out of focus, although they use a f/7.1, with ND filter to a minimum, the second also, the last photo is the center unfocused, weird, although I focused well, please check the EXIF data of the images, no post processing has, as it came from the camera.

What a delay and frustration.

I understand that i have to pay much more for a lens that gives me sharpness in the corners, (i spend $489.00) but in the reviews of this lens those effects is not as noticeable or embarrassing as my results, what the hell is that?

To reveal often use the Lightroom 4.1 or Photoshop CS6 with the same results.

In conclusion, for me and based on all my research and testing, the lens has sharpness issues and focus, i´m right? do i have to apply for warranty?

I´ll wait for your answer, I hope it quick. =)

Regards

I took a couple of test shots a earlier today with my 60d and my tamron 17-50 vc, indoors with flash and identical settings, but the shot with vc enabled was quite a bit blurry, the shot with vc disabled was a lot sharper. You could try disabling vc, just make sure shutter speed is fast enough, then unsharp mask. I also tested this lens outdoors with vc disabled and I was surprised how sharp the results were. I always used the vc thinking it would help my images.

Are you shooting hand held, or on a tripod? If using a tripod, turn the VC OFF. To get a better understanding of what's going on, I would set the camera up on a tripod, with good lighting conditions, 100 ISO, and take some shots with VC off, using live view and maual focus at the 10X magnification setting, with a 2 second shutter delay. Then try the same using AF, and compare. At various aperture settings. This should tell you if there is s fault with the AF, VC, or something with the lens its self.
Hope this helps

ok I was wrong about vc causing blur, this shot was taken with vc enabled and it seems pretty sharp.

If any of you need a quality UV filter for it, I have one for sale at a great price in the marketplace (https://photography-on-the.net …p?p=15001865#post15001865). I used this for my Tamron 17-50mm.

Canon 40D | Tamron 17-50mm 2.8F | Tamron 70-300mm 4.0-5.6F VC USD | Hoya HD Circular Polarized Filter | B+W MRC UV Filter | Manfrotto 055XPROB + 488RC2 |
