Does anyone have any idea, information, etc on when the new Canon 24-70 II will be released?
I know it was pushed back to September at some point, but any more specifics?

Can't wait to see the reviews. Most likely will be spectacular, like the new 70-200 II. Would be very tempting, but the number one lens I am waiting for is the EF35 f/1.4 II.

Out of curiosity, what's wrong with the current 35L? Or rather: what would you like to see improved?

The latest edition of Amateur Photographer has a lens special and it is talking about the present 24-70L in the past tense as though the mark 2 is already out. To me that means in days, not weeks although Canon might decide to mess us all about!

Mid September was the last I ever heard - from Canon months ago.

I'd love to hear current news. More importantly I'd love to see a ship notice!

I read some comparison on the Canon, Zeiss and Samyang. It appears that Samyang was actually the best of the bunch (in terms of sharpness, CA wide open etc) and Canon the last. This of course doesn't mean its crap, since it is completely relatively. The difference is probably not huge. For me, it just means that there is still room for improvement for this excellent lens since optical technology (design/coatings/manufacturing process etc) has improved significantly in the past 10 years. Take for example the 70-200 f/2.8 IS v1 and v2, I knew it was coming and waited, and was glad that I did. Was there anything wrong with the v1? Same answer there.

As I intend to use this 35 prime as a standard walkaround, AF is paramount. But should I get the current Canon model? I don't like to buy an old model and then get slapped on my face when a significantly improved version is annouced 6 months later. Plus this will probably be my most used lens in future so I do want to have the very best.

My expectation didn't come out of thin air either. Based on Canonrumors, a patent has already been filed sometimes ago and there are a number of sources saying it could come next year or so. I can afford to wait for the next model so I will. Anyway I have already spent way too much so I am gonna let my wallet recover for a bit.

In short, there is nothing wrong with the current 35L but if I am gonna drop a couple of grands, I might as well wait and get an even better version that I won't regret for.

Sorry for being completely off topic.

On the Canon Rumors site this morning they are now saying the release date is pushed back into October but nothing has been officially released from Canon yet. Can you hear me growling!!!

Canon needs to get their collective S... together and stop announcing new equipment until they are sure they can meet the production timetable. I can live without this lens for now but I've seen several posts on this forum that others really counted on the spring 2012 release. I am glad I didn't sell my Mk I yet........

Games and more games

Canon's lack of communication is SO DISAPPOINTING. They seem to be very eager to announce new products which they cannot deliver in a timely matter. Would not be surprised around 9/16 to see Canon post the following: Updated Availability for the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens

We would like to inform you of an update to the expected availability of the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens. The lens is expected to be available in mid-??????. (We really have no clue) We apologize for any inconvenience this delay may cause, but please continue saving your money for the large increase in price we have planned.
