hi everyone

decided to go full frame and will be purchasing a 5dmk3 within the next two weeks. at present the only lens i will be retaining from my 7d is the 70-200mk2, the new 24-70mk2 will be out of reach for me for the time being however i do require an all purpose lens which will stay on the camera the majority of the time. apart from the kit 24-105mm lens, is there any other lens members may reccommend.

While the 24-105L would be my choice -- in fact, it is my choice -- other options include the 24-70L version 1, Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC, and Sigma 24-70 f/2.8.

No offence OP, looking at your gearlist I am really surprised that you have to ask such a question...

Anyway, the choices are Canon 24-70 mkI or II, Tamron 24-70 VC (or Sigma) and 24-105.

no offence taken. i am a casual hobbyist if thats the term one wishes to use. have used the 7d on a handful of occassions in the last year and still learning when time allows. fortunately i am able to buy the eqpt without to much problem but developing the skill and knowledge is taking time!!!!!

always admired the 5d mk2 and ff hence deciding to put my lot in with a mk3 and get a little more serious in my effort.

furthermore, i don't think i explained myself clearly in my original post. in the past i have stayed safe with gettling telephoto lenses rather than being a bit bold and say going with a prime. so suppose what i'm asking is as an everyday propostion what are other members using if not a staple telephoto lens.

Fair enough.

So how do you like your 17-55? On ff 24-70 is pretty much the direct replacement of it (but better).

If you are looking for a general prime, most people prefer either 35 or 50mm focal length on ff.

Hope this helps.

the 17-55 was brilliant in everyway sometimes i hardly ever used any of the other lenses. plus the added security of IS helped. on the 24-70 i feel i may get slightly exposed by the lack of security afforded by the IS.

been thinking of either the 35 or 50mm is there much difference in IQ between the two if any

The Tamron 24-70 VC seems to be a great lens. Lots of members here recommend it.

IQ shouldn't be the main factor when choosing between 35L and 50L. The main deciding factor should be which focal length you are more comfortable with.

Personally I like the 50mm more as I often find 35mm too wide on ff. But that's just me.

How much have you used your 10-22 and are you going to miss the UWA?
You have at the moment a gap between your 17-55 and your 70-200.
If you get the 24-105 you will have an overlap but if you got the 24-70 you would have virtually the equivalent FOV as you have now with the 17-55.
It depends on funding but if you made a lot of use of the 10-22 I would look at a 17-40 and if that puts a 24-70 canon out of reach perhaps look at one of the sigma or tamron options

....

Interested; define "but better".. I have a 24-105L f/4- which is like 15-65 and the 24-70 is more equivalent to 15-44 on a crop; How is a 24-70 "better" ? Why would I want one ?

Depends on what you shoot. I will pick 35L over 24-70 or the 24-105mm but that is me.

I'm sure you aren't alone. Were I in a position to get a FF camera (and were Canon to make one with an articulating screen), I'd have a hard job choosing between the 24-105L and the 35L as my "walk around" lens.

24-105mm didn't impress me. I sold it and went back to a 28-135mm IS. I never really use the focal length so it was a cost effective move for me. I love the 17-40L on full frame. If I could only have a 2 lens kit, it would be the 17-40L and 70-200L v2.

5D4 or 6D2..... Waiting to find out which I buy | 8-15L |24-70mm f/4L IS | 24L II | 40mm pancake | 100L IS | 70-200mm f/2.8L IS mk2 | 400mm f/4 DO IS
