Noisy IS on 75-300 lens

Hi all (be gentle I'm new!)

My old (non-IS) EF 75-300 broke this summer, and I decided to upgrade to the newer version with IS.

The first thing I noticed was that the lens is very noisy - it makes an audible whirring/grinding noise during and after focusing. This appears to be due to the IS - turn it off and the lens is all but silent.

Is this normal? I have visited a couple of sites that suggest that the IS mechanism can be noisy, but then I also own a 17-85 IS lens which makes no audible noise at all.

I can always send it back to Amazon if it's faulty, but obviously I don't want to unless I have to!

Well, on the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM the IS mechanism makes a brief "skuff" noise when it engages and disengages. While operating, it makes audible whirring and clicking noises. Maybe the 75-300 has a similar system.

(The more modern lenses are quieter and only make a soft clicking while the IS operates. I have to put my ear to the barrel to hear those.)

Beg your pardon - the lens you mention is the one I have (Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM). Don't know where I got 75-300 from!

My 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM does the same thing. I just bought it last weekend, and almost returned it the next day due to the noise which last about 4 seconds. I wound up keeping it after asking around and hearing that the noise is common. My 28-135, and 17-55 lenses are much quieter, although if I am in a quiet location and put the lens up to my ear I can hear some noise.

My 70-300 is virtually silent, but then, my hearing isn't the greatest anymore, either.

Mine does produce a certain amount of noise, but nothing too loud. The 17-55 is quieter.

I have the same problem with 70-300L (very loud noise) and less with 100L macro
With cheaper lenses like 18-135 and 55-250 II no problem at all
