24-105 Focusing Sound

I just purchased a practically brand new 24-105 L (was told it was only used three times and kept in a safe)

Everything checks out except when focusing, I get an uncomfortable grainy grinding noise. What sounds like there is some sand or dirt underneath the actual focusing ring, not the glass.

Is this a major issue and can a local camera shop help with this or will it need to be sent to Canon?

I really hope this isn't a huge problem, I love this lens!

Update: There is definetly sand or something in it. There are new a few particals in the lens itself....

Im pretty sure its the IS,thats normal... turn it off and give it a go

If you have a camera store near you that will let you try out lenses, try one of theirs and see if the sound is the same.

I've had mine for a couple of years now, and it is absolutely noiseless. Take it someplace reputable, but would probably be best going to Canon.

Well ended up taking it to a local camera shop. They tried to blow it out but that didnt work. She said it wouldnt be an issue and eventually the sand will disintegrate.

Should I worry or no? I took some shots and I can't notice any spots or marks on the photos. A fully repair would be about $200 o.O

i bought this same lens brand new used it for couple of days on the beach in Oregon. I got the grinding sound when zooming in or out. But after few uses the grinding sound is gone....so don't worry, keep on using it and the sound will die soon.

If you are talking about IS motor sound that is different. You can hear it once you have IS on but it will go away if you flick the IS switch on your lens. I am not sure if this is normal but my lens make this sound ever since it came out of box. It is hard to listen outside but if you are in a silent room or inside your parked car you can notice this sound.
