Hi everyone,

I'm in need of some assistance with my Canon 600 EX. I currently have two of them and one is not exposing properly. The flash is firing in ETTL and Manual however, in ETTL the images are coming out totally black. When in manual, no matter what the power setting (1/128-full power) they are all completely blown out. The other 600 works normally on all settings on the 5D MarkIII. I've already checked custom functions and personal custom functions and I have them set-up exactly the same for both units.

Things I've already tried:
Cleraring all custom functions and starting from scratch
Removing the flash, putting it back on, turning it off, turning it back on (all the normal trouble shooting procedures)

Any help is appreciated. I'm willing to try anything, hoping it is not a malfunction of the flash but it is looking more and more to be the reasoning. I have had the flash for about 3 months and it worked perfectly until yesterday.

Thank You,
Alan

Sounds like a bad pin connection between camera and flash for the ETTL and it sounds like a firmware problem for the M problem.
i.e. call Canon Professional Services to arrange repair. Or, if its within the timelimit send it back to the retailer.

Just for grins, did you make sure the locking mechanism was completely closed? The reason for asking is that the only time I've had irritate behavior from one of my 600EX-RTs was, when I looked closely, caused by my forgetting to press the mechanism all the way to locked and it had worked loose. :-)

One thing I've noticed on the 5DIII is that the fit between the flash and camera on the hotshoe seems to be much less sloppy than between 580EXII and 5DII. The 600 also seems tighter on the 5DII. So, I suspect the flash foot is a bit larger.

Alan,
I didn't mean to imply they update the firmware. In the past when those sort of things happened and I sent my speedlite to Canon it came back with a new circuit board. :-) That's one way to replace the firmware. :-)

Alan
