Hi all,

I am really just getting started in dSLR photography and wanted to give some HDR landscape photos a try.

IMAGE: http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o533/jedgunn/Photos/IMG_1177_hdr.jpg

I am not overly pleased with the result, but was hoping to get some feedback. The photos were taken with the camera balanced on a rock. I think this is what led to the lack of sharp focus throughout.

Do you have any suggestions on compact tripods? Ideal length when closed is around 16-18 inches.

Thanks!

Would also depend on F stop used, the hdr bit is not overdone. As for the tripod have a look at the Velbon Sherpa 500 series, light but sturdy and can be used low/high level also the legs have multi position.

nice shot, like the color/perspective. i'd turn down the HDR a little bit, the clouds look over cooked

Thank you. I agree with the cloud comment, as well. I will keep practicing.

I had f/9 set with 1/60 exposure. The rock wasn't the most stable of things to use as a base.

Also, I reviewed the Velbon Sherpa 555R. It meets all requirements perfectly, except I am concerned over the rated load capacity. Is 3kg sufficient?

Did you sharpen during PP? AT least to my eyes, I'm not noticing a lot of camera shake or softness. I think the HDR might be robbing you of some detail.

Processing apart from the HDR was minimal. The main area I notice the detail loss is in the leafs on the left hand side. Everything else seems to be quite crisp.

Was the wind blowing? Is this a single shot tone-mapped or 3 bracketed shots?

It is a three shot overlay.
There wasn't much wind, but with three shots, although rapid there would be some differences. Is this where you were heading?

Yes, Just wondering if the ghosting is causing the lack of detail on the upper left side. Did you look closely at a single shot before merging to see if there's a difference?

No, I never really did closely examine the shots. I liked the view, had been reading a little about HDR photos, so decided to give a whirl.

Thanks for the help!

No probem. I've had the most trouble with small leaves in my HDRs. Just due to any little movement it will cause them to ghost and cause softness when you do the merge.

Hi there, I use the sherpa with a gripped 50d and lens up to my Canon 35-350 L with no problems. Just make sure you get a good head.

Thanks, that would be the most I'd ever have on it.

Regardless of any scene movement issues, I think the HDR processing is way overdone.
