Sorry for this question guys, I have to ask because there are so many pages on this thread; too many to read through. Will this lens take the Canon 2x Extender?

Also, are there any images here with that combo? I have the MKII Extender, is the MKIII worth the difference in price?

Thanks guys, very much appreciate any help and advice you can give.

Cheers,

Jeff

The 2x II fits nice, but you'll loose autofocus. My 1D mkIV does, so would guess it's the same with the 1Dx... max f8?!

1DX actually only has AF up to f/5.6...

Thanks for that. What about the image quality, is there much drop off?

Haven't done some serious tests, but the images I have taken with the 2x and 400mm looks good to me. But wouldn't crop too much..

seen this tread? Some pics here showing the 400 with a 2x:
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=547046

and here's a video I found, using the 400 and 2x:

Thanks KristianV, very useful. In summary, if you get the light righ you're OK, but otherwise the 400 + 2X extender is a difficult combo; certainly not good for a point-and-shoot expedition.

However, the 400mm lens does seem to produce crisp sharp images so I think I'll give it a go.

Thanks guys, all most helpful ;-)a

Jeff

Given the choice, would you buy the 400mm f/5.6 or the 300mm f/4 IS

Do you want IS or 100mm extra reach? Depends what you wanna do with it.

If your subject objectives are more wildlife & birds versus sporting events then get the 400/f5.6 along with a monopod and you`ll be happy since you apparently already own the 70-200 f2.8 MKII that takes a 1.4 extender so well.

Below are a few samples using a Kenko 2x + 400/f5.6 + 5DMKII + monopod which is not the easiest task to accomplish but if i can do it other folks can also:

Love that Grebe, Jason! I find them very hard to get with my 400 as they like to swim out in the middle of the pond instead of coming near shore.
