Okay as some of you know I have had this lens just over a week. Here are some of the things I have found.
1. Focuses FAST.
2. Need a camera with good AF ie 1 series or 5D3 or maybe a 7D
3. The color, and bokeh are nice even at F5
4. The DOF gets razor thin below F1.6 especially when you are within 3 feet
5. Shoot multiple shots if below F1.6 to play it safe

The lens is very SHARP, F1.2 is useable for sure!

Not to be a Fan boy, but I Love the image and the impact it makes. I agree with all of the above. I have found that I was not to very fond of the 50 or the 85 until dialing it all in on my 1 series bodies. The rumors seem to be true with the 5d II, either focus and recompose or else, but like you said rattle a few off and get a good keeper every now and again. I really have made use once I acquired the MkIV, then I went back to the 1D3 and found it just as useful. Great images again, congrats.

I picked this lens up during the recent Adorama deal, and have been quite pleased in comparison with the 50mm f/1.4. It pairs well with the 5D3.

Love this lens, esp. for extra reach in low-light on a 7D. I take fotos of belly dancers, and when we're doing club work, this is the lens for either medium distances or tighter shots. The look is just velvety smooth, love it! Concrats downhillnews on your new glass, hope you enjoy it a lot!

I've been shooting the 50L for a little over a month now, my thoughts are so far, my keep rate has definitely gone down (more of a user issue), however, the shoots I do keep is absolutely amazing, and the color and sharpness is actually better than what I am normally used to from my other lenses.

I think I just need to log more time and practice using the lens, its slowly becoming my favorite out of my collection.

Is it just me or this pic does not even look sharp at all?

For a shot at F/1.6? That's pretty sharp. Focus looks to be right on her glasses.

I recently rented a 50L for my 7D and this was my exact experience. My keeper rate wasn't great (partly because I was shooting a VERY active toddler on the move) but the ones I did get are phenomenal.

Yes, the focus is on the glasses. Very little sharpening performed when processing, either. I wouldn't expect much better at this aperture on a full frame -- the DOF is pretty thin.

Yes, 50L is among the best L lenses. When I bought is earlier this year, there were a few negative reviews, but I have only positive things to say about this sharp lens...
