Just thought I would share some of my landscape shots on the inca trail, one day when I have more time, I hope to reprocess them.

This is the only site I remembered the name of; winay wayna. One of my favourite spots on the inca trail. Sort of like a mini machu picchu but with less tourists

Night shot of snow capped mountains, lights to the right were from a campsite.

WOW, great shots! can't wait to see them after your pp. If you turn "image editing ok" on in your profile I will play with them and see what I can do for you. Or you can just say it is ok for me to do so.

Great shots! Do you have to hike/walk in and if so how far?

here is edit of first photo

I corrected white balance, recovered highlights and shadows (levels), increased contrast and clarity then slightly increased vibrance (it increases reds, greens, yellows mostly) then reduced overall saturation to compensate for increase colors from vibrance. Corrected for camera and lens (available in Lightroom and PS).

it may still be a bit oversatured so if want I can reduce it some more.

Thanks for sharing! I've seen plenty of shots of the ruins, but I've never seen any along the hike to the site. Sure is some amazing scenery. I'd also be interested in hearing some more details about the hike. This is a dream trip for me and my wife.

Thanks for the edits. I need to get some decent software to do stuff with... I'm only working with canon dpp and free software atm. If you prefer the edit with the RAW files I can post them somewhere for you.

The inca trail traditionally is a 4 day 3 night trek, though they do have some variations to this itinerary. Its basically camping along the way, sleeping in tents. Porters carry most the heavy stuff, and you can pay extra to have porters carry your personal items (though you will still need to carry a daypack). There are various campsites along the way with 'hole in the ground' style toilets... they can get pretty gross. After 3 days of it (plus lack of showers and sleep), my wife nearly had a mental breakdown :) She did recover from her moment of weakness, and in the end was happy she did the trip.

I really enjoyed the scenery along the way, and it is nice seeing the inca sites and getting some of the history from the guides.

In terms of photography gear, I brought a sigma 18-200mm and sigma 30mm with a canon 600d. The sigma 30mm didn't see much use, because I couldn't be bothered carrying it in my day pack (left it with the porters). Also the trail can get a bit dusty so I didn't want to change my lens much. The versatility of the 18-200 was good, but retrospectively I do notice the images are not as sharp and clear as I would like them to be. I guess everything has a trade-off.

Also bought a mini tripod (ultrapod 2) which I used for the night shot. But besides that didn't actually end up using it much. Didn't find that much need of a external flash for most my peru trip, and am glad I didn't bother bringing one.

Here another shot... I forgot the change the iso back, after taking the prevoius shot at iso1600. Needed to get a bit more dynamic range in there as well. Wish I could go back and take some these shots all over again :)

3rd photo edit: I don't know if you were using a polarizer or not but this photo could have used one. You mentioned that you are just using Canon DPP and freebie programs, don't know if you know about RawTherapee free program for RAW files, available at www.RawTherapee.com (external link), it is pretty good.
If you want a free trial of Lightroom 4.2 good until end of October, download it at www.labs.adobe.com/downloads (external link)
Lightroom is available for $149, and if you are student or someone in your family is you can get it for $79.
there are other freebies, I will see if can get you a list.
