Here's a 92% waning gibbous Moon for my fiend Alan to guide him home on his 10 hour drive back to NYC, taken just as he pulled away from my driveway.

Were born, we live, we die; very early along that journey I was fortunate to meet you Al, safe travels!

Setting Moon (this morning).

60Da manual
Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/s1 ZE

ISO 100
f8@ 1/125s

I'd like to make one little point about shooting the moon (or even stars). I set the camera at f8 for this image because I wanted enough depth of field for my barn and everything behind it to be in focus. I occasionally see shots taken of the moon, posted here and other places, where the photographer set the f stop at f8 and sometimes even higher. If all you are shooting is the moon there is no need to do that. You are handicapping yourself when you stop down. The moon is at infinity for any lens you could ever mount to your camera. Open all the way up and give yourself some shutter speed or ISO room to play with. If I'm going to shoot the moon and nothing else I'll typically set ISO to 100 and the lowest f stop I can get. Then I adjust my shutter speed until the meter reads about 2 stops under. That's my starting point. My camera is always in Manual mode (an exception would be rapidly changing lighting situations) so if you shoot other modes try M for shooting the moon or stars. I take the first shot, chimp, and if I get blinkies then I speed the shutter setting up 2/3 - 1 stop. For long glass (600 -800mm) the 2 stop under setting is usually a good starting point.

Pretty much my first attempt to shoot for the moon (the first couple were milky white blobs). I was using my old Canon EF 75-300mm which I have to admit is not a particularly brilliant lens but the close up capacity did improve the image over my 200mm. i think I have a way to go in this one.

That's a pretty good first attempt. Try kicking up the exposure in post 1/2 stop or so. Maybe not that much.

7D with 70300L and Kenko Pro 300 2x TC for 600mm. Handheld and manual focus. F11, ISO 800, 1/160. My new geared tripod head arrives tomorrow. I'm looking forward to using lower ISOs for this.

Here's mine from a few minutes ago, since I can't sleep I went out and took a few shots. Surprised the AF worked so well at f/11.
