I have $200 to spend on a good tripod set.
I'll need it for architect/pano/landscape.

I'm thinking Manfrotto 055XDB or Manfrotto 055XPROB and a ballhead.
The reason for ballhead is that I shoot portrait too.
And maybe DIY L-plate or nodal panohead

What do you think? What would you suggest?

thanks -

I bought a four-segment-legs Benro about a year ago... liked it much more than the Manfrotto. Very sturdy, very smooth functioning, compact, really nice carrying bag, high quality in all respects. A year later I am still very happy with it.

I think I paid $218 for the version I bought. Ordered it from HongKong (or China, I can't remember now).

Up your budget a little more and go with the tried and true: LINK (external link)

I went with the 055XPROB and a Vangaurd SBH-250 ball head (external link). I have yet to come across a situation where I thought I needed something more!

Congratulations on finding a tripod! I'm also looking for a tripod, and instead of making a new thread, do you mind if I hijack this one? :)

I've made a list of the options I'm looking at. The 055XPROB is on it, along with eight other models. Are any of these definitely better or worse than the others? If anyone here has any comments regarding any of these setups, I appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

The list is here: https://docs.google.com …bHgybjhPeHYwZDJIZlE#gid=0 (external link) (Note: All measurments are in metric units: cm and kg).

I went through the similar process and ended up with FEISOL 3442.

You really need to know what you want. for me the folded length is important and the height without CC is equally important. with that consideration my list shorted to only two choices (3401 and 3442). then i bought 3442 because the local dealer does not have 3401.

by the way, in addition to the "stated support weight" that has no industry standard to compare, you probably want to check the diameter of the last section of the leg - that will tell you something.

Thanks for the input, guys! I ended up ordering a Sirui N2204 + K-20X kit. Really good specs for a reasonable price. Looking forward to receiving it in a couple of weeks!

What convinced you to buy that one? I'm not familiar with the tripod. It wasn't on your list.

It came to my attention on another forum. The Sirui brand has received some very favourable reviews. What closed the deal for me, was the combination of the high end specs and material, and the appealing price tag.

If you compare the Sirui N2204 to the Feisol 3441T, the Sirui is almost as tall, is shorter when folded, and supports a heavier load. It is a bit heavier, but sports a few nice features that the Feisol doesn't have, like the monopod option. You can se an unboxing video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOevriaMTxQ (external link)
