Anyone know what kind of bird this is. I found it laying in the road, it has one maybe both wings broken. I looked in my bird book and cannot find it. It has to be the sweetest bird ever too. It was really sad though, there were about 15-20 dead birds of this kind laying on the road near where I found this one. They were going crazy in the rain and flying into the road and into cars. So very sad, I hope I can nurse this one back to health and release it.

Also any tips on feeding? Since I don't know what type of bird I am not sure what he/she eats. I have seed in there right now but the bird isn't eating it. Also every time I do in to try to get it to eat something it hops on my hand. I want to handle the bird as little as possible, since I plan on release him/her but every time I try to do anything for it, it hops on me. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

looks like a young swallow to me, I expect that they eat insects so not sure how you will feed it...maybe you could try one of those insect filled suet blocks (assuming you can get them over there). If it has a broken wings then its may be a struggle getting it back to health without expert help. In the UK we have wildlife hospitals/trusts which help with this sort of thing, I would expect you have similar. Your story of finding so many dead and erratic behaviour does sound abnormal behaviour wonder what caused it, it kind of reminds me of when pods of whales beach themselves...nature has many curious and unexplainable behaviour patterns....hope all goes well and it recovers well....sorry I couldn't be of any more help.

I would contact a local rehab facility....in my area we have several and volunteers are located all over the state specializing in all kinds of local wildlife. Thankfully right across the street from me an older couple rehabs small songbirds.

Thanks so much so all the feedback. I did find a website that based on beak shape showed what the bird ate. As birderman suggested it was insects. This bugger ate all the moths I could catch this morning and that was about 30! I am not sure what a bird like this eats per day, one page I found said about 24 moths per day but I thought birds ate way more than that per day. I am just happy that this little boy/girl (I call it a "her", tell it what a pretty girl it is..;o) had such a wonderful appetite. One website said that due to shock the bird might not eat so this bird at least is comfortable here and not in shock. She is also drinking water I am dripping from a syringe.

Duane, I did find a website for wildlife rehab and I put a contact into them to see if they have somewhere local I can take this bird. Sadly we are in the middle of nowhere so I am not sure if they will have anywhere I can take her. I guess I will soon see.

Thanks again to all!!

So good that you are trying Renee. It does look like a Tree Swallow, but who knows. Do you have a local Vet who you could consult?
