There is a viral strain detected in mice found living in the insulation of the tent cabins in Curry Village that has thus far killed 2 Americans and sickened 4 others. Tens of thousands of people have been exposed this summer to the hantavirus between June and August.

It's Sin Nombre hantavirus, in all likelihood, and carried by the deer mouse (see my avatar!). If you're packing your own tent or just hiking, there's virtually no chance of contracting it. I'm sure by now Curry Village is cleaner than a surgical ward.

It's somewhat old news in that it's been in the news for weeks. My daughter was rock climbing in yosemite just last week, and stayed in curry village. She's fine and everything is fine in the village.

It's certainly worth taking note of the situation in Yosemite, but I would also think that we'd all be shocked if we knew what kind of viruses we were exposed to in our every day lives!

This virus has an incubation period of up to 40 days so she needs to pay attention to changes in her health.

This hit close to home. One of the persons who died, worked at my wife's job. We have a trip lined up for Yosemite next month but we're going nowhere near those places.

I bet in Australia the news made it seem like all of California was dead, right?

The Griffith Park Fires caused an Italian friend of mine's parents calling worried about him because "All of LA is on fire!"

Sorry to hear about the deaths. Stay safe, John.

I'm going to Yosemite next month. Is this big news in the US? Has it or will it have a noticable impact on visitor numbers?

It's big news, but it's not much to worry about. Where are you planning to sleep while there? I'm sure you'll find the park more comfortable since some people will panic about this and cancel their travel plans.

We're staying at the Lodge at the Falls. I'm hoping for lower crowd numbers, hence my question! :D

9 isn't bad, given the thousands of people who visited Curry Village this summer.
