I'm having a pretty tough time with focusing, TBH. Love the look of the lens, both wide open and stopped down. This one is actually much better than my last copy, which was also good. However, the one I bought about 6 months ago needed a lot of contrast, color, "blacks" added to make a picture look it's best. This one does not. However, for street photography I just can't see well enough to focus. I miss the vast majority of my shots. This one was with live view.

I've got a EG-S screen on my 5DII and find that with a close-up subject I can focus pretty well, however, with anything at a medium distance, I have much more trouble. As a result I've been using live view quite a bit with this lens. I expect, however, to get better with more practice. Regardless, for me the inconvenience of manual focus is far outweighed by the rendering this lens gives for its price.

Friend, why ask us? Look through the thread. That is the best way to know. There are tons of portraits here. See if you like the style. You might want to look at the 50mm thread, too, and see if that might be more your style.
