Canon MT-24EX or Macro Bracket?

Hi,

Trying to determine if I would be better served by spending $800 dollars now for a MT-24EX or spend $300 dollars for a cable flash and macro bracket?

I'm worried that if I fork out the $300 now I may lose on that if I upgrade to the MT-24EX later? Would it be better to get the MT-24EX now?

Is there any real advantage to the MT-24EX or a bracket? I know the MT-24EX has variable light output (also needs an adapter for the 100L - nice oversight Canon!).

I'm new to macro - but always hate buying something that I will end up upgrading in the not to distant future.

just remember that if you are buying a mt ex 24 to mount on the 100L, you will also need to get a macrolite 67c adapter ring which is not included with the flash.

Yes. 1:1 macro as well as using it for general photography.

I thought the adapter was included with the purchase of the MT-24EX?

while i do not have the mt ex 24, nor the 100L - i think it can be safely said that at this point you can get macro bracket (for a lot less than $300 BTW) and try it out before splurging. Look on the boards for the RAM mount - i forgot which thread it is in - as one of many examples

there are those who would suggest that using the mt ex 24 on "solely" 1:1 is less than optimal and there are planty of examples of posters using their regular flashes. Look up LordV's kit in the thread of macro rigs or many others and the plenty of fine examples that it can bring.

With that said - many people are more supportive of the macro dual flash for 2-3:1 and more for many reasons - both ergometrics as well assome of its features (e.g. modelling light).

Anyway, the mt ex 24 can mount without additional adapters to the 100 non L USM and the mp-e-65each of which has a filter size of 58mm. the 100 IS L needs the macrolite adapter (available in adorama and B&H if not many other places)

Agree with above- think a bracket mounted normal flash is probably better than an MT-24 for upto 1:1 shooting. The MT-24 comes into it's own with the MPE-65.

Thanks for the replies.

Was looking at the Wimberley macro brackets, but when I add up all I would need (F-2 macro bracket / M-8 Perpendicular plate /P-5 Camera plate) it comes to $306 bucks and then I have to add on the remote cable - another $100+ dollars. So I am already half way to the MT-24EX.

Will have to keep looking for a cheaper alternative - maybe one of those pringles cans?

I have a ram mount set up, I think a smaller canon flash would be better though, maybe the new 90EX. I have a 430 on mine and it's a bit cumbersome at times.

Hi Ceriltheblade and Chrisa,

Do you screw the 1" ball directly into the camera base or onto some sort of connector. Unfortunately the pictures are no longer avail at that link.

Does this give enough length to get the flash all the way to the front of the lens?

How do you connect the flash (580ex) to this?

Any chance of a picture of your setup to see what it looks like?

thank you for the picture. I see you have some sort of bracket to attach the Ram to. I guess I will call them on Monday to see what they may have to attach to the camera.

It' s just a piece of aluminum that I bent and drilled holes in.

an additional note:

I have used this with the screw from the ball coming out of one of those plastic ebay tripod rings and it worked realtively well an even coming from the tripod screw under the camera. I like that possibility less because the camera then cannot sit flat, but in a pinch - it worked.

Chrisa I see used a different piece of the ball and screw (Chrisa's has the plate), mine on the other hand, is just a ball with a 1/4-20 screw extruding from it. Just a factual difference.
