I wonder if something is wrong with yours... Mine never hunted in good or low light. Always locked on very quickly.

same here. Mine never hunts, even indoor it's fine and locks on quickly and accurately...

It doesn't have USM focusing. The STM system is really designed to best mesh with the T4i for quite decent full time DSLR video work.

Unfortunately, IMO, 40mm is a betwixt and between focal length, neither suited well to full frame nor 1.6x crop cameras...

However, according to the interest level on verious formats, Canon has hit a commercial success with this lens.

This is the closest focal length Canon has to a true normal. It certainly is useful.

Feedback: Bought - Thinktank UD50. Sold - Canon 24-75.

Hmmm, I was just getting ready to buy one. Not sure if I need it but wanted to play with one. But after reading about some of these issues maybe I'll just see if I can find one for rent instead to see if I really like it.

Canon XTi with a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Looking to upgrade to a Canon T4i gripped. Offers welcomed.

Don't waste your money on renting this lens. Buy form B&H or similar and return it if you don't like it. :)

I'm having a similar problem, it just won't focus when using the left-outer focusing point on a 5D2. I'm pretty much stuck to center with the lens. I didn't realize that the firmware update only works on the 3 bodies listed.. The thing is though, I really like the focal length and compactness, not sure what I'm going to do.

I have a 5D2 and all the outer points are hopeless anyway....it's the limitation of the body and its ancient AF system:cry:

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually found one used (month old) and decided to just take the plunge and went ahead and purchased it. Now I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival. Hopefully I like it and I get a good copy.

I got the pancake. Love it-bye bye Zeiss Tessar and CV 40mm F 2.0. Serial number range is past the firmware update range. All is good.
