Nice shots. The Egret Skimming is great.

The more I see from this lens, the more I realize I don't have to get the Canon 300 haha. Gotta start saving up the pennies!

Whenever I look through this thread, the more I think I'll be getting this instead of a 70-200. Get an 85L, keep my 100L, and get the 120-300. I want this lens BAD!

Gabe, any 100% unprocessed crops for those Ospreys please? This lens still intrigues me but would have to take sellable shots at 600mm.

I'm glad I bought it. One of many reasons is the zoom range! It makes it so versatile being able to cope with different situations. For instance at sport evenings or airshow. I attended one last Saturday. Have a look if you like:

The lens has lifted my camera!! I envy you the Canon 7d autofous and 18mb for cropping though:)

Hi all,

This may be slightly off-topic, but since this is the main thread on the Sigma 120-300 OS I will still post my question here:

I bought the SIgma, for Canon not too long ago, and I use it (very sparingly due to time constraints) with the 550D (T2i?). Concerning the quality it seems pretty good to my fairly untrained eye.

What bothers me: when I set the 550D to AI Servo mode and with IS on the Sigma lens (normal, not panning mode) the lens continously makes a fairly loud "clicking" noise.

Is this normal or should I send the lens to Sigma for a check-up? Not quite sure if AI Servo and IS is a good combination.

Also, I note from the documentation that the lens is incompatible with a tripod. Can you please tell me what this means in practice? Should I really take care to switch off IS if I use a tripod (a Gimbal Benro GH2)? My thinking was that at 600 mm with a x2 converter, if the tripod is not totally stable I may still take advantage of IS. But if it is incompatible maybe I shouldn't?

Thanks.

I think when they say "not compatible with a tripod" they mean that using OS isn't. The lens should NOT be in OS mode when on a tripod. OS will look for movement and according to some it may cause unwanted motion.

Anyone else have an opinion?

Seems that the OS gave up today, just stopped working while shooting  (11 months since new, fortunately Im having a 5 year warranty on this lens..)

I saw gabebalazs OS gave up in back in April.

Anybody else experienced the same "a broken OS" with this lens?

A few new shots from the weekend. Mostly with the Sigma 2x TC again. All of them cropped and processed.

Gabe, awesome shots. Some of these remind me of hawkman (Gene on dpr) way back when I started bird photography.

I have...sadly.. It is for Nikon.
My first copy was really sharp already at F2,8. Then the AF started clicking en OS failed to work, so i returned it.
Got my second copy which wasn't as good as the 1st, only sharp at f4,5.
Now waiting for my 3rd copy... Fingers crossed..

My OS stopped working saturday for the second time. Once in 2/2012 and now. Auto focus broke in 7/2012 and again in 8/2012. Sending it back today for the forth time. Just bought a used canon 500 f/4 IS from adorama and just got notice it shipped. May sell the sigma when I get it back.
its a great lens when its working.
