Sending mine back. Does not focus well (at all) in good light with outer points on 5Dc and 1DmkIII. Too bad...

My classic 5D pretty much sucks at focus with any lens outside the center focus point. Now a 1 D on the other hand...

The 1DmkIII was the clincher, even though the pancake is most definitely worse than any of my other lenses on the 5Dc's outer AF points. I was actually to the point of upgrading my 5Dc to a 1DsII over this. Then I found out that the lens isn't going to focus well on a 1D either...

The upshot is that I'm still going to upgrade to a 1DsII. :D

Sad for you. I haven't tried the 40mm on my 1D3 yet, but it's been working just fine on the 5D2, even the outter points.

In a nutshell, what do you guys think about this lens. I need another lens, but I mainly shoot portraits so do you think this would be maybe a waste of time or a pretty solid purchase?

LMBO!! I love pancakes and I love this pic! I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my pancake lens and now after seeing this, I really want to head over to IHOP for some real pancakes. :o) To be honest, I'm not even sure if I need the pancake lens I just couldn't pass it up. We'll see when it gets here.

I've learned that working with the negatives can make for better pictures...
Canon XTi with a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Looking to upgrade to a Canon T4i gripped. Offers welcomed.

you already have a T2i and 50 1.2? This is my opinion: it's gonna be a complete waste. A 40mm is targeted for people like me who want a super small and lightweight lens for travel. it's also targeted for video with AF on T4i. Otherwise it's doesn't offer anything else. Your 50mm isn't that much bigger. If I were to have a 50mm 1.2, I wouldn't buy this 40mm
Again, my 2 cents :)

Assuming your gear list in your signature is current, I think you'd be better served by buying an 85mm instead of the 40mm. The Canon 85 1.8 is fairly inexpensive (under $400 new) for the quality you get. The Samyang/Bower/Rokinon/etc. 85 1.4 is a great lens at a great price ($300 new) but there's no autofocus. Not a big deal for some people (like myself) but it's a deal-breaker for others. Then there's the Canon 85 1.2. That is the creme de la creme and it costs accordingly ($2000+ new).
The 40 is a great lens but would overlap too much with your 50 and I think the relatively deep DOF would drive you nuts if you are doing primarily portrait work.
