I shoot portraits and weddings.

My old setup:
T2i, Sigma 30mm 1.4, Canon 50mm 1.4, Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro, Canon 70-200 F4L IS

In the past 2 weeks I decided to go full frame, so I kept my T2i and 50 1.4 and sold all my other lenses for a grand total of $1800 and in the past week I've purchased:

5D Classic, 4x 8gb 30m/s CF cards, 3 batteries
Sigma 85mm 1.4(Returned it, couldn't focus accurately past 5-10m)
Canon 135L
Canon 17-40L
Canon 35 f2
Canon 85 1.8
Samyang 35mm 1.4
Canon Ee-S focusing screen

Costing me a total of $2835($1035 net). I LOVE this buying used stuff. All my new gear is used, but it's all in incredible condition. Literally looks new, works perfect. All of it even came with boxes and warranty cards.

If there's anyone out there that DOESN'T buy used, reconsider. Seriously. It cost me $1035 to go full frame, buy 2 incredible L lenses, a sweet manual focus lens with amazing colors and sharpness, and 2 more fantastic lenses to fill the gaps. If I had bought new it would have cost $3100 just for the lenses, and since you'd have to buy a 5d mk2 to get a new full frame body, you're looking at $5200. Buying used saved me $2365, $919 if I had purchased a used 5Dc and new lenses.

Now, when my girlfriend says, "I know it was a lot of money... but I got it all at TJ Maxx!" I can remind her that, "I know it was a lot of money... but I got it all used on forums!"

I bought a used 70-300 EF f/4-5.6 a few weeks ago, and I was nervous that I was getting someone's headache, but it turned out OK. I don't think I could buy a used camera body unless I personally knew the person though. -rick

I am keen on trying out different lenses, so I'll buy on CL or kijiji and if it's not exactly what I wanted, then I will just sell it. Nothing lost, nothing gained. Better than renting IMO.

Only ever ran into one problem buying used. It was an older Sigma macro lens. Before the DG versions came out. Luckily I was able to correct the problem by replacing the focus drive belt for $10.

I'm in Canada. Isn't that weird!

I agree that used is the much more cost-effective way to go with bodies. Bodies are computers. They get replaced every year or so and their used prices drop. Buy used bodies.

Canon lenses are not so clear however. I think new is the better choice. Often the used lens will be priced only 10% lower than the new lens. In saving 10% you're giving up the Canon warranty which can come in very handy. Of all my lenses, a surprising percentage have been sent back to Canon for AF calibration - all under warranty.

Third party lenses don't hold their value so well. Sigma, Tokina, Zeiss all give some fairly substantial savings in the used market.

One solid reason to go used is that most used lenses hold their value very well. Buy it used for $x, try it for a while, resell it for $x. If you're not sure if the lens is right for you or if you just like to try different lenses, the used arena is a great place to experiment without losing your shirt.

I only buy used lenses when the price is around 1/3 cheaper than buying new. Anything less than that and I don't bother.

And like you mentioned, their resale value is excellent. I've sold many lenses for the same price as what I paid for them. It's crazy. But that is just how it is. A free 3 year rental for me. :D

I just bought a 70-200 2.8 IS II for $2000 all in. The lens looks just like it came off the shelf from a shop. Here locally, three different retailers are wanting $2749 plus 13% sales tax for a whopping $3106! Sorry, not doing it. That's an $1100 swing. I'll take my chances with the 1 year warranty. I still have $1100 to play with. 1 year warranty is skimpy anyway. I know I could look around online, but in Canada, choices are not as vast as the US, you still have sales tax, shipping etc, and I doubt it's selling anywhere for much less than $2400 plus tax. These Canon L lenses hold thier value. If you keep them in good shape you'll be able to recoup most of you're costs when you sell down the road.

Same goes for accessories. Just bought a nice mint Hoya UV filter for $35 all in. The same filter is selling for over $80 plus tax locally. Let's face it, there are not many deals when it comes to buying photo gear new. The shops around town (local place, Henry's, Future Shop) all sell the same gear for the exact same price. What's the point? They expect you to go in with cap in hand and ask for a discount. They then search online to see who is selling it cheaper and if it's true, then charge you the shipping you would have paid, plus the sales tax etc. Guess what? I've found a better way. I stay patient, check this forum for the right deal and save a bundle. Except for my 5D II kit, which was an awesome deal, everything I have is used.

I actually got my camera body on amazon from adorama with a 6 month warranty, so I was pretty comfortable with that! As far as the buying and selling goes, if you're patient and take good care of your gear you can land some incredible deals, and if you're buying in photography communities you can go off of good feedback to know you're getting something quality. Photographers are always selling and buying to adjust their style and upgrade, so it makes a lot of sense to build up a good rep so the good deals keep flowing!

I've bought almost all of my gear either used or refurbished from Canon or Adorama.

I honestly can't think of a single reason why anyone shouldn't buy factory refurbished camera equipment. It's in the same, or better, condition of anything "new", it costs significantly less, and still comes with a warranty long enough for anything major to pop up if it is going to happen at all.

Of my bodies and lenses, I've only purchased one 7D, my 50 1.4, and cheepo Rokinon 8mm new.

I don't buy expensive used gear anymore...too many problems, and I only buy from FM. Since negative feedback is not allowed here, you don't have any way to find problems before you buy. I bought a lens that was described as mint, but arrived with missing screws and the lens hood wouldn't attach. The problem is that the same person continues to sell here with only positive feedback and I know of at least one other issue with an item he sold.

EVERYTHING I have right now is used except for my flash. I received it all in MINT condition and couldn't be happier.
