Is it just me or is it not even as good per pixel as the D800? Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me.

Looks like it really falls off a cliff at 12800, but for me that's ok since I don't consider any current camera great at 12800 anyway so no loss there.

doesn't look bad...

Ill probably just get another d800, the only thing I dont like is that it does not have a nef2 mode of 50% pixel size. the crop mode is great for the 24mm and up but at Wide it just suc.... kills my computer btw....

i'd probably pick up a D4 for a 2nd body, it'd make a good replacement for the 7D I have.

I was really expecting the D600 to be released at $1500-1800, so I ended up getting a D700 + grip for $1600 after the D600 announcement.

For someone like me who doesn't really need 20+ megapixels, I think the D700 is arguably the better camera. The D700 still has great high ISO performance, up to 8 FPS, 1/8000 max shutter speed, better AF system, better build quality, and more powerful in body AF motor for older AF-D lenses.

I know the D600 has 39-AF points, how many are cross type?

Center 9 are cross type, vs center 15 for the D4/D3s/D3/D800/700 etc. Compared to the 5D II which has 1 cross-type AF point, haha.

If you like to use teleconverters, the D600 has a huge advantage over some other Nikon bodies (and over Canon's 1D bodies) in that the D600 has 7 functioning AF points at f/8.

Thanks, I already saw that one. Someone on DPR actually resized them (both up and down) to match for a better comparison. Still I would wait for more thorough comparisons and to check the camera myself at a store. I won't buy any camera without trying first.

9 points or 1... for me they're functionally identical since the 9 cross-type points are clustered in the middle. Neither one gives me what I need, which is cross-type points toward the edges of the frame, particularly at or close to the rule of thirds intersection points. This is the main problem I have with Nikon cameras--none of them have cross-type points anywhere but around the center of the frame.

I was arguing the same point when I was upgrading from 7D to D700...cross point > non-cross right!? Well partially..
It's all about how the AF module perform as a whole. 7D can have all cross point spread over the whole screen but I won't say it performs better than D700.

D3 have the same AF module as D700 but many people claims it have slightly better focus and D3s is better than both...they are not build equal
Same with 5D3 and 1DX, both use 61pt AF but different stuff under the hood

Sounds like you need a new computer, Not another camera, Your computer should easily be able to handle RAWs from a D800

Maybe Nikon should add cross AF points toward the edges next time around.
