Body upgrade - experiences 5D3 Vs options

Hello everyone,

Currently running a 7D w/ 70-200 2.8 IS II for motorsport work.
I am making good money, and I also shoot commercial work and events (and static automotive), and business is split almost 50/50 between motorsport and commercial.

I am happy with the 7D but at 3 years old, and who knows how many shots (over 50K), I am looking at an upgrade. In certain locations, at 200mm, I am cropping to 1/9th of the image and losing resolution.

So the question is - what do I upgrade to?
Is the 5D3 "fast" enough? I lose 2fps, but I think 6fps is fine. What about AF? I chose the 7D over 5D2 because it was too slow everywhere, does the 5D3 really suit?
I need either APS-C OR FF - APS-H has no suitable wideangle option.

Or, do I change camps?

Sounds like you need longer glass if you're concerned about how much you're cropping some images.

Agreed.
Problem is - APS-C, and a 300mm probably covers me
FF, and I need 400mm

There's a stupid difference in price between a 300mm f4 and a 400mm f4....

400 f5.6 is a great lens and cost is comparable to the 300 f4.

I saw some photos from the Charlotte NASCAR race this past May from a 5D Mk3 and they looked pretty darn sharp IMO. I didn't hear any complaints about poor AF tracking or the slight drop in max fps.

Yeah, seems the word on the street is the 5D3 is more than capable of doing what I require - 6fps raw w/ max of 17, more than sufficient and the AF seems good with tracking. As good as the 7D? Not sure, but I am willing to find out.

Depends on how much reach you need. The 400 is 120mm longer than the 200 w/converter.... I have a 70-200 f2.8L and a 300 f4L and my converter works better on the 70-200 but both are good. A friend has a 400 f5.6 and with enough light it's very very fast!

400mm would be the max required, and I think in time I will grab a 400/5.6. I mostly shoot daylight, for night drifting I will have to make do with the 70-200 2.8 and cropping.

I think the price of a new 5D3 is pretty close to the price of a used 300 2.8. That might be an option, with a 1.4 converter you'd have a 420 f4. I rented one for the Goodwood Revival this past weekend and it worked really well. With the 1.4 and 2 converters you are covered out to 600mm.
