The original color process. Tri-negative... Some of the first color cameras created 3 negatives at the same time then you would use dye transfer to make prints.

Also if i remember correctly early spacecraft did something similar (They could barely make -black and white- imaging stuff.. Let alone full color! They used a simple black and white television vidicon tube coupled with a filter array, This also gave them the advantage of using it to measure other things by simply applying different filters...)

Technically i mean, all digital sensors are "monochrome" its just that we apply a filter array to the surface of the sensor in a pattern and then combine those to create color, the only issue is that it reduces resolution in 2/3 of the colors (Bayer array patterns, like say on the 7D, collect 12mp of Green, 3mp of Red and 3mp of Blue information..) and this can suck sometimes...

Derp, forgot to add "Except Foveon, Foveon is... special"

The way i understand it a Foveon works because different wavelengths of light travel through the silicon differently, So basically you have a layer that blocks and records blue light, then green, then red... then these are added up and you get an image...this is why you get 15mp x 3 on a Foveon array...

Ironically from what i read this technically should be more sensitive and should, theoretically, produce less noise than a bayer-array camera while delivering superior performance free of aliasing artifacting... I still ponder why nowone else uses the things besides Sigma

I remember when Leica M was about 3 times more than both the top of the line Canon and top of the line Nikon. Now they're about even. Actually looks like Leica is a bargain now.
