Hello!

I'm considering buying a used canon 17-55 IS USM lens. I have a few questions:

1. Does it have a date code writen on it's mount?

2. I've heard there might be some problems with IS stop working. Does that affect most off th copies or are there some bad batches or "years" I should be aware of?

3. Are there any other common problems with that particular lens?

Thanks for answers.

according to lensrental, there ARE bad years of these lenses. I think it was 2009 or prior, check their website and search for it.

The only major issue is they are dust magnets. I have cleaned mine twice. The dust doesn't affect the image, even at small apertures but for anal people the fact dust is in their lens can be a real downer. It doesn't bother me at all. I have had mine for years and it usually lives on my 7D. Love it, no issues.

Got mine in 2008. Never had a problem.

There are no date codes on the EF-S 17-55.

Its a great lens and my all time favorite. It is so versatile. I sold mine last week because I decided to go full frame at this focal range. Before I sold it, I sent it to Canon for cleaning and complained about the IS being jittery. It was shaky on occasions. So they cleaned the lens, and ended up replacing the entire lens focus assembly and the entire IS assembly. I had it for 3 years. Cost was $150.

I bought mine used in 2008 (a 2007 model). Used it daily for 2 years. Never a problem.
I put a filter on and didn't really have much dust problem

6D + enough lenses for now.

I had one I bought used...not sure how old it was though. I used it for about four months or so but sold it when I sold my 60D and moved to FF. I didn't have any issues with the lens and it took great pics.

I don't buy used, but if I did, I'd look at the Canon refurb sale going on right now, or I'd buy from another place with a warranty on used lenses. I think that Adorama may do this for refurbs.

No way I would buy a used 17-55 when you can get NEW Sigma 17-50 OS for less.

More money for a used lens with known durability issues and no warranty or a New lens with similar performance and a 4 year warranty. Not a tough call.

Actualy I can get it for less than the sigma. However those extra bucks give me warranty and a peace of mind.

Here's my perspective on it. My 17-55 was stolen after I'd used it for a year. For me it was a no brainer to replace it with new 17-55.... no settling for a lesser brand or different Canon model. I love my 17-55 and never considered going with anything else.

I had the Sigma 17-50 OS, had issues with the AF, rather than keep returning it, to hopefully get a good copy, I returned it and got the Canon 17-55. Granted, not everyone has this problem, but it gave me piece of mind. I've never regretted my decision. I love my Canon, and have not had any problems. In fact, it's my main go to lens. It hardly leaves my camera! If your looking for used, try B&H, adoroma, or even Canon, they have a refurb program. Good Luck
