One kinda funny part about it. As I was sitting in Starbucks and waiting for him to arrive a male baristas looked at me and asked if i was waiting for a short Asian guy. I was kinda shocked because he man sounded Asian over the phone.

"Why do you say that?"

"Oh, I saw your camera boxes (which I had brought as proof of ownership) and there is an Asian guy who meets people here all the time to sell camera gear, phones, and stuff. We've told him we don't want him doing that here but he keeps coming back."

"Well, that might not be a problem anymore."

"Uh...okay."

At which point he walked away to do barista stuff. So after I got my gear and the police detained the guy the barista looked at me, smirked, and said "Ah, I see what you mean now."

"He tried to sell me my own stolen stuff."

"Awesome."

He then gave me a free pumpkin latte.

What an awesome story! Weren't you afraid to pay for your own lens again on eBay that you might not get your money back?

What an awesome story! Weren't you afraid to pay for your own lens again on eBay that you might not get your money back?

I called and spoke with PayPal before I made the purchases. I spoke with a manager there and posed the hypothetical that if I had bought something on eBay that turned out to be stolen, and the police confiscated it, would I be able to get a refund. She said yes, why do I ask. I explained the situation and she advised me that after I receive the items, contact the detective on the case and say I handed over them to the police as stolen items and they would take care of it on there end.

If that failed, I figured I'd at least get my lenses back for cheaper than it would have otherwise cost me to replace, especially since it turned out my insurance was useless. He was selling them at a good price and I knew they wouldn't last long. The police were going through the legal motions of subpoenaing the eBay for the sellers information but they warned that it usually takes up to 10 days and by then my stuff would be gone.

Nice job. I'm in the middle of the same story (although only one piece of camera gear was stolen). House was broken into 6 weeks ago. I was able to start tracking the stolen laptop last week, which lead me to the guy who had it (traded some stuff to another "gentlemen"). The cops did a raid this morning, recovered almost everything taken from our house. The lens (Sigma 30mm) doesn't match my serial #, and I don't recall ever comparing the serial # to the registration card when I bought it. Very frustrating, as I can't imagine the guy happened to have a bunch of Sigma 30mm's! Sigh. It was a good day, though. It feels good, doesn't it Tiggity-T?

Might be a potn member. Sounds like he knows about the Sigma lotto.

Wow how much stuff was that guy selling at that coffee shop to get them annoyed enough to question another patrons about boxes? And why did he tell you he suspected they were stolen? Did he realize you were on to him?

this is an awesome story.

lots of good advice here if it ever happens to someone else. I would imagine most people would skip over one of the details you covered.

congrats again.
