You guys all convinced me. Ordered my 600EX-RT and ST-E3-RT yesterday. Sold my two 580EX II today and now I just need to sell my PW FlexTT5's and MiniTT1 & AC3.

You will love it.

It's speed and portability

I love it. My only gripe is that the ST-E3-RT does not have an infrared focus aid. What a ridiculous omission by Canon.

That's Canon for you. They don't seem happy unless they cripple something.

I've never had an easier time with a flash system than with the 600EX-RT's. They are a blast and makes things so much easier than pulling them down and resetting the power etc...

^^^ Canon should use this in their 600EX-RT web page.

On another note. I was in B&H today lamenting over lack of easy triggering of Studio flash units with 600EX-RT system. David in lighting showed me this optical slave unit which can ignore pre-flashes, like some YN flash units.

This device seems to work. First you press a button and fire the flash in eTTL mode. LED on the unit will blink to indicate how many flashes were detected. Once done, it seems to trigger attached flash correctly.

One word of caution though. These units are very cheesy in built quality and run on some small 12V battery. First three unit did'nt even turn on. I bought one anyway.

I have two 600ex-rt, one ST-E3 and a 580EXII
QUESTION: using the ST-E3 as a master on radio feq to trigger the two 600ex-rt, can i stick my 580 next to one of the 600 and get the 600 to trigger the 580? If so, what wire do i need?

cheers,
Scott

Someone with more brains can answer this one, but my best guess is 'no' because the 600s will be in slave mode, and to trigger the 580 you will need a master. The 600 cannot be a master and slave at the same time.

You could use the 600EX-RTs in light based wireless mode. Then all the speedlites, including the 580EXII are addressable as slaves from the master.

Don't you have to use one of the speedlites as the IR master then? I thought the ET-S3 couldn't trigger slaves in IR because it doesn't even have an AF beam. In which case, MFG would still only have 2 off camera flashes and might as well just stick with the RF only setup.

Thats what I'm saying. He is using the ST-E3 as an RF remote (it has no IR remote). So the ST-E3 is a master and everything else is a slave. So the 580 cannot be triggered by IR. That leaves only the 600's which are in slave mode, so those can't trigger the 580 either. That's how I see it.

youll just have to dump the ste3rt and use a 600 as a master or the 580 as a master and use the optical line of site system as opposed to radio. Why did Canon get rid of IR in the ste3rt? We will never know.

Well I got my two 600EX-RT flashes today and the ST-E3-RT trigger is a few days behind. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions for you guys soon. Sold my two 580EX II real quick and all the PW stuff I had. Anyone know how the team at PW are doing? Got to believe this new system is hurting their business. It too bad since systems like theirs pushed Canon down this path. Maybe they'll come up with some nice third party additions to the new canon system.

Think canon would come with a transceiver like a Flex55T that works with their system and would support older flashes in ETTL mode. Would be a killer addition. Or maybe PW could create that?

The problem seems to be that older flashes 550, 580 do not have radio built in. If Canon develops an add-on receiver for old units and other studio flashes, that would be great.

I just don't understand the philosophy of not including AF assist light in ST-E3.

Yasmin.

The thing is here that any such transceiver would likely cost more than selling a 580ex and buying a 600. A transceiver or better a simpler receiver only would be a better idea for those of us using 430s as slaves. I think a another good idea for PW or Phottix would be to develop a transmitter like the ET-S3 that could trigger both IR and RF slaves at the same time and actually include a focus assist beam.

Rumor has it that a smaller 430 like radio controlled flash may come out at the beginning of 2013. That would be great. Still would like to see some one design a radio receiver compatible with the Canon system to enable other flashes to be compatible. For older Canon flashes adding support for ETTL would be a bonus. For other brand flashes of course manual control is all we could ask for.
