17-40.
Someone broke one at work and the boss couldn't be bothered getting it fixed.
My gain... It cost me $120.

First one I bought outright was the 70-200 2.8

Looks like a lot of people went with the 70-200 f4 non IS .
It is a great way in to L class lenses , well built , nice usable zoom range , great IQ , reasonably priced .

I will hopefully be getting mine in a couple of days, it is in customs at the moment! only took 5 months after buying my 450D body.

Body: Canon 450D Gripped
Lenses: Canon 70-200 F4 L, Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6, 1.4x Tele Converter
Check out my Facebook Page (external link) (dedicated to my racing, not photographing), and give it a like!!

I have had my 50D about a year.

I will pick up my first 2 L lenses in a month or so when my house sells.

70-200 2.8 and 16-35 2.8.

Well, that is the plan at this point.

So from when you got your first (D) SLR camera, when did you get your first L lense?

What was it and what did you have to sacrifice to get it?

I will get mine in about 30 years if i start saving now.

Also... check out the "What L's do you own" thread

I already owned a 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS and a 70–200 f/4L when I got my 1st DSLR. I didn't really sacrifice anything to obtain the glass other than having the pleasure of shooting three Ironman Triathlon races for a publication (35mm film). The glass was part of the compensation package. I sold the 70–200 f/4L last summer a bought a 70-200 f/2.8L IS II... best lens I've ever used and a pure joy to shoot.

300mm F4.0 IS

Bought it used and coul dprobably sell it for more right now than I paid for it so I consider it a good investment.

Recently picked up a 24-105L and am quite happy with it too.

Bought a 70-200mm F4.0, I didn't use it for about 5 months and recently started using it and holy crap this thing is vibrant and sharp!

I'm planning on selling the 70-200 and my tammy to pick up a 24-105mm L. Hopefully it won't disappoint..
