I'm having a moment of turmoil in my mind. I absolutely love these photos, but have noticed that most of them are using a full frame. Would that mean that I should just get a 50mm 1.4? I know that translates to approx. 80mm, but I imagine the compression is different...

I have a Sigma 30mm 1.4 and absolutely adore the lens, but I just want something different, so I started looking at cheap additions.

I don't know what to do. :(

If you love the 30 1.4 you're gonna adore the 85 1.4 :)

I don't doubt that I will enjoy the lens, I'm mainly worried about the focal length. I have a 100mm 2.8 macro (of course just before they announced there would be an L IS version :|). I noticed most people use it with a 5D and the FL is PERFECT, so that's why I am leaning towards a 50mm 1.4.

Decisions, decisions.

Unfortunately, samyang doesnt have a 50mm in their lineup, so you'll be missing out if you'll go to another brand. :)

dtek, it IS a little long for a cropper. but still a very nice portrait lens, much as a 135mm is on FF.

thing is, it's SO CHEAP for the IQ, as you can see from this thread... it's worth a shot IMHO.

many folks buy one and find they can't handle the MFing, so maybe scour the used section? with a lens like this, there's not a whole hell of a lot that can go wrong mechanically, and there's NOTHING that can happen electrically! :)

Thanks for the replies, Gents. :)

I'm still indecisive, but i would definitely like to give it a whirl, I'm just trying to decide if i want a 50mm more. :P

Also, how is the focusing without any sort of focus screen modification? I don't mind being patient and most of my subjects are stationary, so I can try a few times. But if it a nightmare to focus without aid of a focus screen, it may make me more hesitant.

Choosing the proper granola can be perplexing. And those shots are both kick ass.
