Suspicious... nah, couldn't be.

Haha, well, I've owned both lenses, and the Nikon is much sharper in the corners. Maybe Nikon took some hints from Canon formula 5 years after the Canon's release and added some secret sauce?

Any two lenses of a similar focal length are likely going to look similar...

and that Nikon 24-85 was a hidden gem in their lineup with a sadly short lifespan, You can get one for a song now

I wonder if the cheap FF bodies are going to drive the price of older cheaper full frame lenses up?

It's amusing really. In the old film days (not that long ago) every one was happy using f5.6 zooms. But when Digital came along (with its increased costs) it's upped all out expectations and now everyone seems to want large f2.8 zooms and fast bright Primes.
These days, there are some better equipped hobbiests than many professionals.

Even funnier is back in the old film days we didnt really have much beyond ISO800.. ISO1600 film was iffy and 3200 was only for special effects

These days? We whine if 3200 isnt squeaky perfect and clean...

Back in the old days we used to be fine with the fact a lens like the 28mm f/1.8 was pretty soft at f/1.8, Because well, it was the difference between getting SOMETHING and getting NOTHING lol...

I know a guy who's never done a paid event or wedding, and yet has a D3s with 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8, and 200-400 f/4 VR. And I'm sure he's far from the only one.

And there are lots of folks with high performance sports cars who don't get paid to drive. So what?

Why have (2) 70-200 f/2.8 lenses; one Canon, one Tamron?
