I missed last week's opportunity to shoot a football game due to some unfortunate events, but at least I got some decent shots this week:

Here's my shots from last nights game. Shot from one knee tonight and liked it a lot better. I feel these are better. Still gotta watch my horizon lines though

sweet
we have a Tuscola Jim Ned high school in Texas
Colt McCoy UT and Browns QB went to hs there

didn't Greg McElroy: Bama and Jets QB also come from that school, or was that Southlake behind the kid that went to Missouri ?Blaine Gabert or something.....

I saw where the state of Texas has produced fully 1/4 of the starting QB's in the NFL at the present time. Pretty incredible!

A few flashed pics from Thurs. night. I am not liking the shadows from the flash mounted below on the monopod. I think I will try to rig it up for the flash above the lens to try and get some more natural looking shadows. Going without flash is not an option as this field is 25600, 2.8, 1/400 for exposure without flash.

let's see.... 1Dx, 1D IV, 1D III, 5D III...........you collect cameras (very nice cameras) or something :) ?

care to part with one of those sweethearts ;)

Washington Patriots took on the Martinsburg Bulldogs Friday night and were thoroughly trounced 63-15. QB for Washington (#11) was running for his life most of the night with Martinsburg sacking him 8 times in the first half. Painful to watch, but the boys never gave up. Martinsburg is poised to win the WV AAA State Championship again this year. It would make 3 in a row for them.

^^^^^^ nice shots Drew, that stadium must be pretty well lit ...
with your settings of 2.8, ISO 3200, SS 800, you still have a little bit of blur sometimes, in an otherwise very nice and sharp image (that Sigma 70-200 is better than I thought and that is the one without OS correct?) so I am thinking that you keep all other settings the same but speed up SS to 1/1000 so you can freeze the action better. Yes, it will be underdeveloped but with PP software these days that can be easily overcome, while motion blur can't ...

just my two cents... like the shots

Thanks, William! I'll try the 1/1000, but right now at 1/800 I'm a stop to stop and a half underexposed depending on where I'm on the field. And yeah, my Sigma is the one without OS but I'm pretty happy with the results I get out of it. Thanks again.

Ha! Can't disagree with you about the coach. Unfortunately, it's boys playing amongst men when going against Martinsburg. The only reason Washington scored 15 was because Martinsburg put their JV players in once the score reached 56-0. The JV actually scored against Washington's Varsity defense.

If you don't mind me asking. I have the same sigma lens. Has it ever stop focusing when it was cold? I had mine outside (it was about 30-40 degrees) from 5:30 PM and then about 9 PM it stopped focusing the first thing I checked was did I turn it off but I did not. I turned off the camera (60D) and it worked but was slow focusing. Switched to the 85mm and t worked so the camera looks like it was not the problem. After I got home and it warmed up and it works fine now.
Anyway great shots

mrwilt, no shame in that at all. Martinsburg is GOOD. One of few teams in WV that would likely beat my Wayne Pioneers. We're averaging 50 or so points and typically have backups in early in the 2nd quarter. Our best game we were up 46-0 after one, 65-0 at half, and our JV had to try super hard not to score 100 in that game. We took a knee on PAT's, ran straight up the middle every play and still hit 84. Could have easily scored 120 or more in that game.

I shot a game friday night at a field with the worst lighting ever. So figuring I would end up with hardly any keepers I shot my 7D at ISO 12800. I was totally shocked at how well it did. While not 5Diii or 1DX quality, it surprised me. Here is one unedited.
