There was a discusion the other day on FM on the 70-200 II with TC III vs the 100-400. From pictures posted as examples, with regards to IQ, the 100-400 was better, but not by a large margin.

It is still not worth the hassle as AF will hunt around a lot and you REALLY need a lot of light. That's what I gathered. Thanks for jumping in and clearing it up for sure. Oct 10, 2012 16:08 | #18 Ok, after reading and searching and pm'ing folks, I went and ordered the Canon 2xIII. I think since I don't use the long end as much as most and want to dab a toe in the long end water, it makes more sense to go this route right now. I can always sell it for a slight loss and get the 100-400 later. A guy with a couple cameras, some lenses, and accoutrements

Oct 10, 2012 17:10 | #19 I had the 70 to 200 II And the 2X III a long with the 100 to 400 at the same time. Many of my images with the 70 to 200 And extender were better than the images with the 100 to 400. Sold the 100 to 400 and never looked back. Made the mistake of selling the 70 to 200 and extender a while back and bought a 70-300 L. The 72 300 was okay but I missed the 300 to 400 On the long end. My new 70-200 II And extender 2X III Will be here in the morning. I do not think you will regret your decision.
