What I expect out of it is for the pictures to look at least as good as other 1D cameras or 5D's but most pictures I see on here look like they came from a rebel there are a few exceptions but very few. Maybe it's the photographer maybe not. It's just my opinion.

I see a difference in image IQ with my 1DX being somewhat better than my 1DIII, and with the gap increasing significantly as ISO increases above 1600.

The benefit of this camera, in my mind, is to quickly lock and retain focus on fast moving targets and get pictures such as this:

IMAGE: http://www.jimlanter.us/LegacyHSVolleyball2012/JV-Tournament-9-15-12/i-r4WfNfz/0/L/Legacy-JV-Tourny-57-L.jpg

and like this:

IMAGE: http://www.jimlanter.us/LegacyHSVolleyball2012/Legacy-v-Sumit-9-21-12/i-VNtdJ22/0/L/Legacy-v-Summit-2-L.jpg

While I could get pictures like that with my 1DIII, the camera did not lock and load nearly as fast or consistently as the 1DX does. Thus, with the 1DX I get a much higher percentage of in focus shots. This is even more true at ISOs in the 6400 to 12,800 range which is not out of question in some of the gyms out there.

The incremental difference in IQ is not the compelling reason to buy a 1DX.

I've looked at the link to your pictures, and have to agree that for the type of subjects you shoot, the 1DX would not be worth the expense. The 5DII is a great camera, and I would continue using it.

Great volleyball shots! I love that dig. No way I'd be getting that shot with my current kit.

Yeah, I don't upgrade equipment without an analysis of my limiters -- what is bothering me the most about my recent sessions? For me, it's been mostly skill stuff, but I wanted a higher keeper rate, and the 1D3 up from my 550D was a great answer to that. I see the 1DX as a great step beyond that when I'm looking for more speed, more ISO loving, etc. But my current limiter is glass anyway, and I'm trying to figure out if a 400mm f2.8L is in my future O_o

If you have a 5D2 and your limiter is IQ, with the glass set I see in that sig, then I'd say lighting medium format are going to make the biggest difference.

I haven't got mine yet, although I do hope it will be very soon. Ready to order now, just grappling with price etc! Im coming from the wonderful 5DMk2 (and 50D) - great cameras.

But the principle I'm comfortable with. The 1DX is the best all-rounder in the world. End of.

Sure it may not have as many MP as the Nikon. It may not have the resolution as the 5Dmk3. It may not even have the resolution for studio or weddings as the magnificent game-changing 5DMk2. It hasn't got the crop factor or the price of the great little 50D.

But it does do everything - everything - incredibly brilliantly.

It's insane at sports or moving subject photography. Incredible in low light or wherever you need an extra 2-stops faster shutter speed - whether in weddings inside the church, whether to get a low light shot handheld or miss it, whether to take it out in the rain or not, how much pp you need, how many shots are keepers when you are taking a) pro football shots for a living b) motorsports 3) your kids and your cats and dogs playing in the garden d) BIF as your budgie dives out of the open window in a bid for freedom e) pictures of the bear that you have just urinated upon shaking himself dry before coming to kick the crap out of you (with apologies to big country!)

This is the camera I want above all others. It won't really take better shots than my 5DMk2. It won't make me a better photographer. I still need to keep up with my compositional classes and art appreciation and my Photoshop nightschool classes. But it is likely to get more shots in focus and they should need less PP than my 5DMk2 shots. And the rapid fire means I stand more of a chance of getting that precise moment as my dog bites my sister's ankle, or my cat scoops out the goldfish, or the touchdown celebration or whatever ...

As Lance said, and it would seem, sadly, that it's true ... it really isn't about the bike. It's all about the guy's performance in control of it.

I'll work on me. Hopefully the 1DX will maximise whatever potential I have and give me the shots that other cameras will miss.

^^^ Nicely put. I also migrated from the 5D2 and struggled with the price diff, but once you own it, it's wonderful. Sure, it's heavier, but it's sharper and the focussing with the rapid burst rate of 12 FPS opens up so many more opportunities; especially hand held HDR with 7 frame AEB instead of just 3. Push the button, you only live once and you'll love it.

It's also great for macro work, better than the 5D2 even though the RAW images are not as big. I'm still experimenting with mine and here's one I took using focus stacking...

Probably because most who use it, professionals, spend their time doing more important things rather than trying to impress others on a photo forum ... the other being that there are few 1DX's out there compared to 5D'S & 7D's .... & even other 1 series.

Save your $$ if you're looking for others to prove something to you.

This.

One important point to note is that when you reduce pictures to 1024 pixels, many just don't hold the same snap or detail as others. I have noticed with my 5Ds that some pictures reduce really well, and some don't, yet they all looked fine at full rez.

I have noticed this with using UWAs as well...some subjects bring out the best in the ultra wides, while others mush up the detail more. Strong shapes and good contrast obviously reduce better.

So when you are looking at the IDX shots that seem less "good" than you expect...give a thought for the fact that they may not have reduced as well. There is also the matter of how the shots are reduced...because I don't use Flickr or another host I have to present at 1024 and less than 150kB...and some shots just seem to disintegrate while others do fine. I recently found a better way of posting them and this has helped.

So don't be disappointed in the camera....just be aware that you are looking at the equivalent of a sports car at full power with the handbrake on!:D

the type of monitor also impacts on the viewing quality of the images, I'm using a Thunderbolt display and all the images in the thread are awesome

Correct. I'm picky about what I edit on and my EIZOs do the job. Zen and Smug are the best options for web presentation. My problem with Flickr is that it sharpens the image on the upload.
