Thanks for the feedback eveyone! I agree that I could go a little stonger on the blacks. I'm always concerned about losing detail in the shadows and I probably should worry about it less as the increased contrast will improve the image more than having detail in some of the dark shadows.
Deveraux, your images in your gallery look fantastic. Great action and the image quality is so nice. I look forward to seeing more of your images as the season continues.
I keep thinking that an upgrade to a 5DMkIII will get closer to that image quality than my 7D, but have yet to pull the trigger.
You're welcome, and glad to help. The last three years I shot with a 7D 70-200 2.8 IS combo (mark 2 last year), so I know what you are dealing with. I had the same issue with that combo where my blacks just didn't seem to get dark enough and it required some PP.
One thing you may want to try to do is once you get the image processed to your liking, go into Photoshop and duplicate your background layer and create a Soft Light layer, and change the opacity of the layer to 10-15%. That should give you some pop in contrast, and will make those darks just a hair darker. I know it's time consuming, so you may only want to do that on your best shots.
Thanks for the compliments on my photos. Our first regular season home game is this Saturday, so I should have some images posted shortly after. With the NHL on lockout still, we've got some great talent in the AHL in NHL players who are still in their Entry Level Contract. For example, first overall pick Ryan Nugent Hopkins and Jordan Eberle are playing for Oklahoma City. Another first overall, Taylor Hall, would also be playing for them if he wasn't injured.
